Albany State University will honor Coach "Hamp" Smith during the Golden Rams football game against the Central State University Marauders at 4:00 pm on Saturday, October 7.
Hampton Lee Smith served two stints as the head football coach at Albany State University in Albany, Georgia, from 1971 to 1976 and again from 1982 to 1999, and compiling a record of 157–90–4. Coach Smith was also the head baseball coach at Albany State from 1981 to 1983, tallying a mark of 46–37–1.
"On Monday, we lost a true legend and icon in the Albany State University RAMily. Coach Hampton Smith's impact on the athletics program (both in baseball and football) as well as the lives of countless student-athletes is immeasurable. Coach "Hamp' Smith will forever be in our hearts," AD Dr. Kristene Kelly.
During pre-game, Coach "Hamp" Smith will be honored with a moment of silence. At halftime, there will be a video tribute and balloon release at midfield. Approximately, 100 former players of Coach "Hamp" Smith will participate in the special halftime tribute. For the remainder of the football season, the Golden Rams players will wear (HS) decals on the side of their helmets in honor of Coach "Hamp" Smith.
The Viewing for Coach Hampton Lee "Cutta" Smith will be held at Poteat-Wakefield Funeral Directors – Dunbar Chapel, from 11:00 am – 7:00 pm, on Friday, October 6, 2023. The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am at Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday, October 7, in Albany, Georgia. The Interment will be held at Crown Hill Cemetery and Mausoleum.
