Albany, GA – Albany State University Athletics has been selected to receive an NCAA Division II Internship Grant, which will fund a full-time, one-year Assistant Director of Athletics Communications position. The appointment will begin July 1, 2026, and run through May 30, 2027.
The grant provides critical support to Albany State's athletics communications operation, particularly during high-volume and crossover seasons, while also creating a structured pathway for the development of an emerging professional in the field.
The Assistant Director of Athletics Communications position will serve as a primary sport contact for assigned programs and manage responsibilities including game coverage, statistics, historical record-keeping, media relations, and conference and NCAA reporting. The role will also support game-day communications operations, assist with workflow coordination, and contribute to storytelling and content development initiatives.
"This grant comes at the right time for us," said Director of Athletics
Dr. Kristene Kelly. "As our programs continue to grow, the demand for accurate, timely communication has increased. This position helps us maintain consistency and quality in our coverage, especially during crossover seasons, while also allowing us to be more intentional in how we tell the Albany State story. We're equally excited about the opportunity to develop the next generation of sports communicators through real, hands-on experience."
The position will report to Assistant Athletics Director for Strategic Communications Terica Peay and will be fully integrated into the department's daily communications operations.
"This role is designed to develop a complete communications professional," said Peay. "They will be involved in everything, from serving as a sport contact and managing live stats to supporting media relations, game-day operations, and mentoring student interns. At the same time, they will have opportunities to contribute to storytelling and content development. It is about building a strong foundation while preparing them for long-term success in athletics communications."
In addition to day-to-day responsibilities, the position includes intentional mentorship and professional development opportunities that further support the intern's growth and readiness for a career in intercollegiate athletics.
