ASU SAAC wins third consecutive SIAC crown

For the third consecutive year, the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) has announced that Albany State University’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is the winner of the 2012-2013 SIAC SAAC Citizenship Award. The ASU SAAC was among other SIAC SAAC programs that competed all year to acquire points by completing community service projects and other initiatives on their campuses and in their communities.

“Winning our third straight SIAC SAAC award has produced a lot of excitement within our organization and the athletic department,” said Stan McCormick, ASU SAAC advisor.  “Our SAAC representatives and their teammates always go well beyond the call of duty, and they were rewarded again for their countless efforts.

“I am very proud of the job our student-athletes did throughout the year. They represented Albany State Athletics, our university and the SIAC with the highest esteem. They take pride in serving our school and community, and hopefully we can continue to use their great attitudes and hard work to build on this success.”

Each SAAC program in the SIAC received points for public service, raising funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, visits to hospitals, schools and nursing homes, and attendance at SIAC meetings. Led by SAAC President Vanessa Jones and Vice-President Reanah Kellogg, Albany State received a perfect score and raised more than $1,600 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation to win the championship.

“We are very proud of our SAAC program and their accomplishments this year,” said Dr. Richard Williams, ASU director of athletics. “Our student-athletes have a strong commitment to public service and dedication to our university. I commend them on this prestigious award.”

The SIAC SAAC Citizenship Award was initiated by the SIAC during the 2007-2008 school year.  The Albany State SAAC finished second in 2008, 2009 and 2010, before winning its first award in 2011.  After winning this year’s title, Albany State holds the record for the most awards all-time.
