This weekend's matchup carries added weight as it pairs two programs looking to establish early momentum in conference play. Albany State enters with confidence after all three phases contributed to last week's win. Veteran quarterback
Isaiah Knowles led the way with 205 total yards and two rushing touchdowns, while running back
Tiant Wyche exploded for 137 yards and two scores on the ground. Cam Watts electrified special teams with a 90-yard punt return touchdown, and the Dirty Blue Defense stifled Shaw, allowing just 189 total yards while forcing multiple turnovers.
Kentucky State, meanwhile, has already secured a conference win, defeating Central State 34-24 in the Detroit Football Classic. Quarterbacks Torrence Bardell and Denim Johnson combined for over 300 passing yards and three touchdowns, highlighted by explosive connections to receivers Darius Cyprian and Chad Elzy Jr. The Thorobreds overcame a halftime deficit in that contest, proving their resilience and offensive firepower. Defensively, Lawrence McConnell's nine tackles and Elijah Henderson's interception anchored a unit that will look to slow down Albany State's balanced attack.
Historically, the Golden Rams have controlled the series, riding an 11-game winning streak against the Thorobreds. The last meeting came on Sept. 28, 2024, when Albany State claimed a 49-21 victory. Kentucky State's last triumphs came in back-to-back seasons, edging ASU 30-27 in 2002 and 19-13 in 2003. Since then, Albany State has consistently found success, but Kentucky State's early-season form signals a potential challenge.
With both teams coming off strong performances, Saturday's showdown will not only test Albany State's ability to maintain its winning streak but also give Kentucky State the chance to snap a two-decade-long skid against the Golden Rams. Expect a physical, high-energy battle as conference play gets underway.
