Coach Quinn Gray, Sr. to Depart Albany State University for New Opportunity

Anthony Kelly Named Interim Head Football Coach

Albany, Ga. — The Albany State University Department of Athletics announces that Head Football Coach Quinn Fordham Gray, Sr.,  will be departing the program to pursue another leadership opportunity. Longtime Assistant Coach Anthony Kelly will assume the role of Interim Head Football Coach while the University conducts a national search.

"As president, I am called to recognize excellence wherever it rises, and Coach Gray's impact on the Golden Rams has been extraordinary," said Albany State University President, Dr. Robert Scott. "He made it a point to build a culture defined by discipline, accountability, and academic success. His leadership elevated our program, inspired our student-athletes, and strengthened pride across our campus community. We are grateful for his dedication to Albany State University, and he will always remain a valued member of the Ramily. He leaves with our respect and a heartfelt thank you."

Coach Gray's accomplishments mark a historic chapter for ASU Football. In three seasons, he led the Golden Rams to a 24–11 record, delivered a program-best 12-win season, and guided ASU to its first-ever NCAA Division II Quarterfinals appearance. His tenure included two SIAC Championship appearances, culminating in the 2025 title, and ushered in sustained competitive excellence along with a resurgence of alumni and community engagement around the program.

His commitment to academic achievement was equally strong. He led a significant academic turnaround, elevating the team's academic performance dramatically over his tenure, and graduating 40 football student-athletes, including six who completed master's degrees.

"In college athletics, success naturally creates opportunity," said Dr. Kristene Kelly, Director of Athletics. "Coach Gray's success here speaks volumes about the work that has been done at Albany State. We are proud of Coach Gray, and we are equally proud that we have the infrastructure, facilities, and support systems to sustain a winning culture. While we will miss his leadership, we are confident in what has been built and excited about the future of Golden Rams Football."

"Albany State Football is on solid and stable footing," added Dr. Kelly. "We have strong institutional support, committed leadership, and a clear vision for where we are headed. This program will continue to move forward with purpose and momentum."

Albany State University will move swiftly, yet thoroughly, to identify the next leader of its football program.

Further updates regarding the national search will be shared in the coming days.
