ALBANY, Ga. – Before reporting for preseason camp this weekend, Albany State's newest football student-athletes have already made their mark in the classroom.
Thirty incoming Golden Rams participated in this summer's Summer Success Academy (SSA), arriving on campus early to begin the transition to college life. Through the program, student-athletes built academic routines, connected with faculty and staff, and became familiar with the campus resources that will help them succeed throughout their time at Albany State.
The results reflect the success of that intentional investment. The group finished the summer with a 3.22 cumulative GPA, while three freshmen earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. Nearly half of the class (48%) earned a 3.5 GPA or higher, and 25 of the 30 student-athletes finished with at least a 3.0 GPA. Just as impressive, the group earned 239 of 243 attempted credit hours, a 98.4% completion rate, showing the commitment these young men brought to the classroom before ever taking the field in a Golden Rams uniform.
"Our goal is to develop young men who excel in every aspect of their lives," said Head Football Coach David Bowser. "The Summer Success Academy gives our freshmen a tremendous head start by helping them build positive habits, establish relationships, and understand what it takes to be successful at Albany State. I'm proud of the commitment this group has shown, and I believe this is just the beginning of what they can accomplish."
The success of the Summer Success Academy is made possible through the work of Albany State's Academic Support staff, who provide student-athletes with the guidance, structure, and resources needed to begin their college careers with confidence.
As the Golden Rams report for preseason camp, this freshman class arrives with more than excitement for the season ahead. They arrive with a strong academic foundation and a clear understanding that success at Albany State starts in the classroom.
Developing champions in the classroom, in competition, and in the community remains at the heart of Albany State Athletics, and this year's Summer Success Academy is another example of that commitment in action.
