Box Score 2 FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Golden Rams waited a day to get on the diamond this weekend, but it was worth the wait. Albany State used the bats to score in seven separate innings and then strong pitching for a Sunday baseball sweep over Kentucky State, 14-11 and 6-1.
Starting the SIAC series, the Golden Rams scored in six-straight turns at bat for 13 runs and never trailed. Tied at 1-1 heading to the top of the second, Emory Stephens singled home the go-ahead run and then came home himself as part of Nathan Saavedra's 3-run homer for a 5-1 lead. ASU (11-7/9-2 SIAC East) used a 14-hit attack for its 14 runs of opening win.
With two outs in the third inning of Game 2, Luke Addison, who reached on a fielder's choice, raced home on a wild pitch for a 2-0 visitors' lead. The ASU pitching duo of Jeremiah Reddell and Calvin Baker took things from there as they limited Kentucky State (7-11/3-8 SIAC East) to a lead-off third-inning solo home run and four hits overall with eight strikeouts.
Leading at the plate, Zane Ross recorded a 5 for 8 day, including being 4 for 4 with 4 runs, a 2-run homer and two stolen bases before a single and three runs late. Addison went 4 for 10 with a single and a solo home run to start the day and an RBI double in the second affair. Stephens chipped in a 3 for 8 twinbill with an RBI on his hits. Saavedra added the 3-run round-tripper as part of the 14-run first game and Bradley Smith was 1 for 2 off the first contest bench with an RBI and a 2-run double in Game 2.
On the hill, Tyler Bullock grabbed the first win of the day covering the fourth through sixth frames where he gave up four hits, three runs and struck out three. Addison closed it out with a strikeout of the final KSU hitter for the save. In Game 2, Reddell went four innings where he gave up four hits and one run with three K's, while Baker had the win over the final three innings where he gave up only one hit and fanned five.
Game 1
After Saavedra's 3-run homer in the top of the second made it 5-1 Golden Rams, Jonathan Logsdon slapped a two-run single through the left side in the third for a nw 7-2 tally.
Hill Corley singled home one runner in the fifth, before Ross belted a 2-run home run and Addison followed with a solo shot for the second 4-run frame and new 13-4 advantage.
Kentucky State made it interesting in the final four turns at bat with six runs through eight, before Addison made sure only one run cross the plate in the home ninth as he fanned the final hitter with the bases loaded to seal the 14-11 final.
Game 2
Leading 2-1 after six innings, ASU plated a quartet of insurance runs. Logsdon and Ross started the at bat by drawing a walk and a single. Addison drove in Logsdon with a single, Ross scored on a wild pitch and Smith doubled home Addison. Seth Stargell, who pinch ran, swiped second and raced home on a KSU catcher throwing error for the 6-1 expanded lead.
After Reddell held the Thorobreds scoreless in the fourth frame, Baker continued it with three innings without allowing only a leadoff single to his first batter he faced to wrap up the sweep.
ASU and Kentucky State return to the Monday afternoon, March 11, diamond to complete the series in a 12:00 p.m. first pitch.
