Game 1: Blue 12 - Gold 7
What started as a back and forth tussle would blow out late and see the Blue team take the lead in the best of three game series in front of over 175 fans during Albany State Baseball's annual Marathon Game. The Blue team would strike early in the bottom of the first with
Jonathan Palmer being hit by a pitch with one away. He would then come around to score following a walk and two more hit batters.
The Gold team would answer back in the top of the second with
Tate Thompson reaching base with a leadoff walk.
Chase Karn would lay down a bunt single, and after a
Gavin Sloan sacrifice bunt,
Thompson would score on a sacrifice fly to centerfield off the bat of
Darius Stokes. The Gold team would take the lead an inning later when
TJ Thomas turned a leadoff walk into a run after stealing second and eventually scoring on a wild pitch. The Gold team extended their lead in the top of the fourth,
Sloan led off the inning with a single and scored on a
Stokes double. After moving up to third on a wild pitch,
Stokes would score on a sacrifice fly by
Chasen Roulhac.
The Blue team would answer back with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Gage Herring would lead off the inning with a single and steal second base.
Kevin Bryant would then hit a sharp ground ball to second base with an error on the play allowing
Herring to cross the plate.
The Gold team again added to their lead in the fifth, thanks to a one-out double by
Thompson. He would later come around to score on a single by
Karn. After Gold was kept scoreless in the top of the sixth, the offense exploded for the blue team. Back to back walks for
Palmer and
Bryant would lay the groundwork for a big inning for the blue team, but a shallow fly to center would provide an opportunity for Gold to escape the inning.
Unfortunately, a costly error on a double-play ball to first would see
Palmer come around to score, and Bryant move up to second.
After a groundout to short and a walk for
Peter Setterich, a pop up to leftfield would look to end the inning, but another costly error would see both
Malik Bell and
Bryant come around to score and tie the game at five all.
The Gold team would gain the ascendancy again in the top of seventh, a mammoth home run by
Travis Ray would open the scoring, and was followed up by a
Thompson single. A walk by
Roulhac would move
Thompson into scoring position, and he would come around to score after a fielder's choice and a wild pitch. The lead would prove to be short-lived as the Blue team would cross the plate five times in the bottom half of the inning.
Palmer led off the inning with a double to left and would score on
Bryant's game-tying two-run home run.
Kyle Walker took four straight balls, and then an error at first would get the inning going. A
Pierce Thomas sacrifice bunt allowed the blue team to get both runners in scoring position, and
Walker would come across to score after an errant throw at short.
Kyle Campbell's double drove in
Bell and
Setterich to take the score to 10-7.
The blue team added to their advantage in the eighth, what would be the final runs of the ball game. A leadoff walk for
Bryant would get the inning started, and he came around to score on
Bell's double down the leftfield line.
Setterich would come up big with a 2-out rbi single that would drive
Bell home to cap the scoring at 12-7.
Game 2: Gold 2 – Blue 1 (5 inn.)
After a high scoring affair in game 1, pitching and defense took center stage in game 2, with the Gold team winning a tight contest 2-1.
The Blue team got on the board early in the top of the 1st, with
Gage Herring leading off the game with a single to right. After stealing second, Herring would be driven in by
Jonathan Palmer, when he lined a sharp single to centerfield. The Gold team was able to answer back in the bottom of the 3rd.
TJ Thomas led off the inning with a walk and then stole second base.
Chasen Roulhac would then reach base via a hit by pitch.
Will Barry stepped to the plate and connected on one as he drove a deep fly ball to centerfield, which was superbly caught at the wall by Herring. Barry's shot would be deep enough to advance the runners and put both runners in scoring position.
Travis Ray stepped up and hit a hard ground ball towards the hole at short,
Malik Bell made a diving play and was able to throw Ray out at first to record the 2nd out. Thomas would score on the play to even the game at 1-1.
The Gold team would walk it off in the bottom of the 5th when Barry reached base on a walk with one out and would advance to second on a wild pitch. It looked like
Malik Barrington, and the Blue team may be able to escape the inning when he was able to strike out Ray to record the 2nd out. Unfortunately, two more wild pitches would prove costly, as Barry was able to advance to third and then eventually score to tie the series at one apiece and force a pivotal game three.
Game 3: Blue 8 – Gold 3 (6 inn.)
With the Series hanging in the balance, a BP intersquad would decide this year's champion.
After a quiet first inning for both teams, Gold would strike first in the top of the second.
Darius Stokes led off the inning with a double to left and looked to have opened the scoring on
Aaron Ginn's single to left, but was cut down at the plate by a great throw by
Malik Barrington.
Travis Ray would ground into a fielder's choice at third, which would retire
Ginn.
Jordan Griffin stepped to the plate and hit what looked like an inning-ending ground out to third, but an errant throw allowed
Ray to score.
Griffin would be thrown out trying to take third on the play to end the inning. In the top of the third, a
Parker Williams single would get the inning going with one out.
Chase Karn grounded into a fielder's choice at third but was able to beat out the throw to first, which would be crucial as
Michael Reddick would drive a ball into the rightfield gap for a two-out triple to score
Karn.
The Blue bats finally came to life in the bottom of the third as they were able to knot the game up at two apiece.
Jonathan Palmer would reach first on a Gold error and was followed up with a
Blake Howell single to left, which moved
Palmer up to second. He would come into score on
Kevin Bryant's single to right.
Howell later crossed the plate on
Barrington's sacrifice fly to center.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Blue team blew the game open, plating six in the inning while sending 11 hitters to the plate.
Kyle Walker led off the inning with a single to center and would move up on
Tre Turner's single to left. A
Malik Bell single was enough to drive in
Walker, to give Blue the 3-2 lead, one which they would never relinquish.
Kyle Campbell then drove in
Turner with an RBI single to center. A
Gage Herring single would load the bases for Howell, who would add to the lead with a sacrifice fly to left.
Bryant would come up big with a two-out, two-run RBIs double to rightfield and would later come around to score on
Brock Rountree's single to left to finish off the Blue team's scoring.
Gold would pull one back in the fifth, but more poor baserunning decisions would be costly and make their comeback attempts prove to be futile.
Griffin led off the inning, reaching on an error.
Griffin would come around to score on a
Gabriel McKenzie single to left, but
McKenzie would be thrown out at two, trying to extend his single to a double. A 1-2-3 sixth would end the game and give the Blue team the 2-1 series win.
