Golden Rams fall to Tampa in three-game series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 TAMPA, FLORIDA- The Albany State Golden Rams lost to the University of Tampa Spartans in a three-game weekend series. ASU lost Friday's doubleheader by the scores of 9-4 and 7-1, and Saturday's single game 17-9.

With the losses, Albany State falls to 5-12 on the season. Tampa improves to 11-1.

Game 1: Tampa 9, Albany State 4

Albany State trailed by two runs after the first inning. Tampa was able to increase its lead by adding four runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth.

Trailing 9-0, The Golden Rams finally got on the board in the sixth inning. Stephen Lightfoot singled to score Jeremy Arrington for the team's first run. Another single by Sable Gilliard scored Robert Latner and Jacob Campbell to cut Albany State's deficit to 9-3.

In the second inning, Arrington scored again on a fielder's choice for ASU's fourth run. However, the Golden Rams could not score again in the remaining two innings.

Campbell led Albany State with three hits, and Gilliard added two hits and two RBIs. Ryan Latner recorded the mound loss.

The Golden Rams had nine hits and four errors for the game.


Game 2: Tampa 7, Albany State 1

The Golden Rams opened the scoring when Reise McDaniel scored off a Tampa error. However, that would serve as ASU's only run of the game. The Spartans scored all their runs between the second and fifth innings to take the victory.

Reise McDaniel led Albany State with two hits. Jared Arrington recorded the mound loss.

The Golden Ram had four hits and three errors for the game.

Game 3: Tampa 17, Albany State 9

A McDaniel single scored Ryan Latner, and a sacrifice fly by Robert Latner scored McDaniel and provided Albany State with an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Tampa responded with five runs of their own in the bottom of the first to go ahead 5-2.

In the third inning, McDaniel scored again to cut the Golden Rams deficit to 5-3. The Spartans added four more runs in the same inning to take a 9-3 advantage.

Gilliard's double in the top of the fifth inning scored Hector Carrasquillo and Robert Latner and brought the score to 9-5 in favor of Tampa. The Spartans added eight runs in the sixth inning to take a commanding 17-5 lead.

The Golden Rams did score four runs in the top of the eighth inning, but couldn't score any more in the final inning.

McDaniel led Albany State with three hits and two RBIs. Ryan Latner, Campbell and Gilliard each added two hits apiece. Andrew Bacon recorded the mound loss.

ASU had 12 hits and three errors for the game.

The Golden Rams return to action on Saturday, March 1st when they travel to Atlanta, Georgia to face the Clark Atlanta Panthers in a three-game series. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 12 p.m. Sunday's single game will start at 1 p.m.
