Columbus, Ga. — The opening day of the SIAC Softball Championship Tournament featured both explosive offense and resilient competition for the Lady Golden Rams of Albany State University, who earned a dominant first-round victory before battling through a hard-fought second contest at the South Commons Softball Complex.
Albany State opened tournament play in commanding fashion with a 16-1 victory over LeMoyne-Owen before falling 3-1 to Spring Hill College later in the day. The split keeps the Lady Golden Rams firmly in contention as postseason action continues.
Against LeMoyne-Owen, Albany State wasted no time establishing control.
Freshman pitcher
Tamia Pierce delivered a strong start in the circle, tossing a no-hit opening inning while striking out two batters and setting the tone early. The Lady Golden Rams immediately backed her with an explosive offensive first inning that produced eight runs and put the game firmly in Albany State's favor.
The scoring surge began when
Mackenzie Nervis singled up the middle to bring home the game's first run. Moments later, Abbi Jones drew a bases-loaded walk before
Amari Mapps delivered a two-run double to extend the lead.
Olivia Mason added a sacrifice fly, and Albany State capitalized on defensive miscues before Ari McKenzie capped the inning with a two-run double to left center, giving the Lady Golden Rams an 8-0 advantage after one inning.
The Lady Golden Rams added three more runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Nervis, before erupting again in the fourth.
Tranasia Parker delivered one of the game's biggest moments with a three-run home run to left field, helping Albany State secure the run-rule victory.
The offensive performance was balanced from top to bottom. Albany State finished with 14 hits and saw multiple players contribute to the scoring effort.
Erielle Reid led the way with three hits and three runs scored, while McKenzie recorded three hits and two RBIs. Nervis drove in three runs, Parker added three RBIs, and Mapps contributed a two-run double.
Pierce earned the win after pitching four strong innings, allowing just one run while striking out seven batters.
The Lady Golden Rams carried that momentum into their second game against Spring Hill, where Albany State continued to show competitiveness against one of the conference's strongest teams.
Spring Hill struck early, but Albany State remained composed and continued to battle throughout the game.
In the third inning, the Lady Golden Rams broke through offensively when Parker was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing home
Kaylah Howard to cut into the deficit.
Albany State generated scoring opportunities throughout the contest and recorded six hits against a strong Spring Hill pitching staff.
Nervis paced the offense with two hits, while Reid, Ari McKenzie, Fisher, and Parker each added hits of their own.
In the circle,
McKenzie Fitch delivered another steady performance, pitching a complete game while allowing just one earned run across seven innings. Fitch kept Albany State within striking distance throughout the matchup, continuing her consistent presence in the pitching rotation.
Up next, Albany State returns to action Tuesday, April 28, for Day 2 of the SIAC Tournament against Tuskegee University in Columbus as the Lady Golden Rams continue their pursuit of a conference championship.
