STATESBORO, Ga. – The Golden Rams showed their depth with a strong performance this weekend. Albany State's trio of Mykhayla Carroll, Levita Williams and Zenay Rhaney guided the team's effort to a runner-up finish at the Georgia Southern Relays.
Leading the field events, Carroll and Williams both were the top two in three different events. Carroll won the discus with a throw of 36.96 meters over Williams' 31.52m effort. Carroll also won the shot put at 11.37 meters to Williams second of 10.62m. Williams bested the field in the javelin at 21.75 meters, more than 2.14 meters over second place, while Carroll was second in the hammer throw (43.03m). Maya Crowder produced third places in each of the discus (30.60m) and shot put (10.35m).
Rhaney paced the Lady Ram track performers with a 400-meter title and a pair of third places. Rhaney bested teammate Kennedy Simmons for the 400-meter gold by 1.02 seconds (1:00.97 to 1:01.55). Rhaney also ran to third in the 800 meters (2:24.80) and 1500 meters (5:17.50). Sierra Beasley was right behind Rhaney in the 800 meters in 2:29.29 for fourth and she was sixth in the 400 meters (1:05.12), while Azzaria Brown was fifth also in the 400 (1:04.06).
The ASU 4x100-meter relay quartet of Dasia Gilyard, Cadence Cray, Shonkeria Jones and Jeniya Lawrence captured second in a time of 47.13.
As a team, ASU was a strong second with 144 points behind host Georgia Southern's 296 of the five-team field.
Over in the 400-meter hurdles, three Lady Rams finished third through fifth with Mayah Thompson (1:10.03), Kennedy Walker (1:10.95) and Janiya Harris (1:11.24). Walker also ran to fourth place in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 16.14.
Lawrence led the team's sprinters in fifth for the 100-meter dash (12.70), while Imani Jones and Chavondria Crimes were sixth (12.77) and eighth (13.22).
ASU heads back to Atlanta for the third time this Thursday through Saturday (March 28-30) at the Morehouse College Relays.
