In March 2022, Albany State University head football coach
Gabe Giardina announced the hiring of Micheal Welch, who will join the staff as the Defensive Line Coach.
Welch joins the Golden Rams after one season at Lyon College. Welch developed and coached 2 all-conference defensive lineman. Welch also had a prior four-season stint at Coahoma Community College. While at Coahoma, Welch served as the Defensive Coordinator, Defensive Line Coach and Head Sports Performance Coach. Welch developed and coached 17 all-conference defensive players, including three that have been signed by NFL teams. Coahoma was top 10 in the country for turnovers (2016 and 2019), tackles for loss and sacks (2017 and 2019).
Prior to his stop at Coahoma, Welch was the Lead Strength Assistant at Iowa State University following a year at Woodward Academy as, Defensive Line Coach/Run Game Coordinator and Strength Coach.
Welch also had coaching stops at Booker T. Washington and the University of William Penn.
Personal
A native of Houston, Texas. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Management from William Penn University.
Micheal and his wife, Niomi share 2 children Lauryn and Micheal Jr.
Playing Career:
- Was a 4 year starter and 3 year all conference player
- Helped the Statesmen to their first 10 win season in 13 years
- Is currently top 10 in school history in tackles and sacks
- Spent time in the St. Petersburg Tide Spring Football League
