Robert Smith enters his tenth year as an Assistant Coach for the Albany State University Cross Country and Track and Field teams.  
 
He joined the Golden Rams coaching staff in 2014 as an assistant coach for Middle/Long Distance & Cross Country. In his 1st season on staff, he helped lead the men’s & women’s track & field teams to an SIAC Championship for the first time since 2005. Since he joined the staff, Albany State Golden Rams Track & Field/Cross Country programs have won a total of six SIAC Championships: Women’s Cross Country (2016, 2017), Women’s Track (2014 & 2016), and Men’s Track (2014 & 2017). In the SIAC, Smith has produced seven (7) individual Distance Champions, two (2) Cross Country 1st Place finishers, and a 2x NCAA National All-American.

Smith played a major role in the coaching of the current school record holder in the 800m Run, Joshua Ajiero, who ran a collegiate best of 1:48.24. Smith coached Ajiero to four (4) SIAC Championship titles, two (2) All-American Awards, earning a spot to compete at the Division II National Championships, in which Ajiero finished in 2nd place in 2018 and 3rd place in 2019.
 
In 2017, Smith earned his Master's degree in Sports Management from Southern New Hampshire University with a certification in Athletic Administration. He is also level 2 certified through USA Track & Field in the events of: Endurance, Sprints, Hurdles & Relays. Smith also has a Cross Country Specialist Certification through USATF as well. He holds a Strength and Conditioning Certification through USTFCCCA and a USAW Level 1 Weightlifting Coach Certification

During his tenure at ASU as a student-athlete, Smith was a member of the Golden Rams’ Cross Country and Track & Field programs as a long-distance runner where he received All-Conference honors.


A native of Albany, GA., Smith is a 2008 graduate of Monroe Comprehensive High School. In 2013, he graduated from Albany State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.


Coach Smith is a proud member of The Mighty Chi Epsilon Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated (spr13). He has one daughter (Rylee Smith).
