Albany State Football Adds Veteran Special Teams Coach Chris Schultz to Coaching Staff

Albany, Ga. — Albany State University head football coach David Bowser has announced the addition of Chris Schultz as the Golden Rams' Special Teams Coordinator, bringing more than a decade of collegiate coaching experience and a proven track record of developing elite special teams units at both the NCAA Division I and Division II levels.

Schultz joins Albany State after spending the past two seasons at Elon University, where he served as Assistant Defensive Line Coach and Special Teams assistant. During his tenure, Elon ranked fifth nationally in sacks while setting a school record for team sacks. He also helped develop Kahmari Brown into one of the nation's top pass rushers, as Brown finished fifth nationally and established a new program record with 12 sacks.

"We're thrilled to welcome Coach Schultz to Albany State," Bowser said. "His extensive experience and focus on the kicking game will be a valuable asset. We're confident his leadership will immediately enhance our football program."
Before joining Elon, Schultz took on the role of Special Teams Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach at Savannah State University from 2022 to 2023. During his time with the Tigers, he successfully mentored the SIAC Returner of the Year and an All-SIAC defensive end, while also overseeing one of the nation's top special teams units. As a result of his efforts, Savannah State ranked among the Top 15 Division II programs for both punt return and kickoff return defense.

Schultz served as Special Teams Coordinator at North Carolina Central University, where he helped guide the Eagles to the 2016 MEAC Championship and a berth in the Celebration Bowl. That season, NCCU ranked fourth nationally among Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) programs in punt return average at 21 yards per return. During his time with the Eagles, Schultz recruited two All-MEAC kickers and coached four All-Conference specialists, including a preseason All-American kicker and long snapper.

His coaching résumé also includes stops at Florida International University as Special Teams Quality Control, Catawba College as Outside Linebackers Coach, Bluefield University as Defensive Line, Outside Linebackers and Strength & Conditioning Coach, and the University of North Carolina, where he began his coaching career as a student assistant.

Schultz, a proud graduate of the University of North Carolina, obtained his bachelor's degree in Exercise and Sport Science in 2012. He is happily married to Valerie, and together they have two children, Benjamin and Maggie.

His extensive experience coordinating special teams and developing impactful defensive players will further strengthen Albany State's coaching staff as the Golden Rams prepare for the 2026 season.
