This Week in Athletics: Conference Openers, First Wins, and Playoff Battles Await

Albany, Ga.- As the fall season enters a pivotal stretch, the Albany State University athletics programs gear up for an action-packed week featuring home debuts, redemption opportunities, and postseason intensity. From the court to the gridiron, the Golden Rams are set for a thrilling slate of competitions.

Women's Basketball: Home Conference Opener
The Lady Golden Rams prepare to make their long-awaited home conference debut this week. with new leadership under Interim Head Coach Todd Triplet and a roster eager to establish its identity, the team looks to make a strong statement in its conference opener.

The Albany State Lady Golden Rams officially open their 2025–26 conference slate against the LeMoyne-Owen College Lady Magicians. This marks the first conference contest under Interim Head Coach Todd Triplet and the first home appearance of the season.

In the last meeting between the two programs on  January 4, 2025, Albany State earned a convincing 60-46 victory, extending its all-time series lead to 9-5, dating back to December 2011. The Lady Golden Rams aim to continue that success as they transition from their season-opening exhibition at Bethune-Cookman into full Peach Belt Conference competition.

LeMoyne-Owen enters Tuesday's matchup already two games into their conference schedule following losses to Savannah State and Edward Waters. Hoping to halt that early skid, the Lady Magicians bring a young but energetic roster to Albany, while the Lady Golden Rams look to set the tone early at home and begin conference play with a statement win.
   
Football Preview: Round 2 Showdown in the NCAA Playoffs
For the third time this season—and with everything on the line—the Albany State Golden Rams and the Benedict College Tigers will battle once again, this time in the Second Round of the NCAA Super Region II Playoffs. It is the final chapter of a dramatic trilogy between two of the SIAC's most dominant programs.

Albany State enters this weekend's matchup riding high after a thrilling 35–30 win over Valdosta State in Round One, marking their first playoff advancement since 2010 and first victory over the Blazers since 2017. With momentum on their side and a roaring home crowd expected at the ASU Coliseum, the Golden Rams look to protect their turf and extend their postseason run.

Benedict, meanwhile, arrives in Albany after delivering an explosive comeback victory over Wingate, storming back late to punch their ticket to the second round. Under first-year head coach Ron Dickerson, the Tigers showcased resilience, speed, and big-play capability—proving they remain one of the most dangerous teams in the region when the game is on the line.

Men's Basketball Preview:
The Golden Rams men's basketball team returns to action this week with determination and focus as they continue their non-conference slate. The Albany State Golden Rams men's basketball team continues its search for its first victory of the season as it welcomes the Florida Tech Panthers for a non-conference showdown. This matchup marks the first meeting between the programs since 2010, when the Panthers edged the Golden Rams 83–79 in a tightly contested battle.

Both teams are eager for their first win as they head into Saturday night's matchup—Albany State with a record of 0-3 and Florida Tech at 0-4. This sets the stage for a competitive early-season clash. Head Coach Patrick Gayle is relying on a mix of returning players and new additions as the Golden Rams aim to establish their offensive rhythm and build consistency during this challenging non-conference stretch.

ABOUT ALBANY STATE ATHLETICS
Albany State University is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II-level intercollegiate athletic program. The university currently fields teams in 11 sports: women's volleyball, women's tennis, women's cross country, men's and women's basketball, softball, men's and women's track and field, women's soccer, baseball, and football with all teams compete in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), except women's soccer, which participates in the Peach Belt Conference.
