Evans Voted Preseason All-SIAC First Team, Rams Picked 7th

SIAC Release
2026-27 Schedule
ATLANTA, Ga. –
With the season fast approaching, the new look Golden Rams will have a veteran leading the effort. Cameron Evans was voted to the Preseason All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team, while the Albany State men's basketball team was picked seventh.

Evans joins the other four players of the five Preseason All-SIAC First Team members of Morehouse College's Sincere Moore and Brandon Peters, Christopher McKnight from Allen University and the Preseason Player of the Year, Khalil Genwright from Tuskegee. Anthony Wright also of Tuskegee received the nod for the Defensive Player of the Year.

On the team side, ASU comes off a 12-17 campaign where it tied for fifth in the SIAC East Division. In the first basketball season of only one Division, the new-look Golden Rams received the seventh spot of the 15-team field. Morehouse, Clark Atlanta and Tuskegee are rated as the top three heading into the year. Miles, Edward Waters and Savannah State are the three other teams ahead of Albany State.

After being second on the team in both scoring and rebounding a year ago, Evans of Americus, Ga., is set to lead his final group of teammates for new Head Coach Rodney Mayes. The first-year coach has 10 newcomers to go with Evans and five other returners for the 2025-26 season.

Evans produced 337 points (11.6 ppg), 131 rebounds (4.5 rpg) and 79 assists (2.7 apg) a year ago. The senior guard made over 42% from the field (113 of 267), 34% from long-range (49 of 143) and a top free throw shooter (62 of 74 at a .838 clip). He netted double figures in points in 18 of 29 outings with 20-plus points five times, including 24 against LeMoyne-Owen and 23 versus Central State. Evans also netted 21 points and seven boards in back-to-back contests against Allen and Benedict.

Coach Mayes and his Golden Rams start full preseason practice on October 9 and take to the court for the first regular season game on November 13 at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla.
