ALBANY, Ga. (March 5, 2019) –The Albany State University softball team yielded a split decision to Nova Southeastern on Tuesday evening at Golden Rams Field. The Golden Rams used a walk-off 5-4 win to take the first game, before the Sharks' answered in game two to earn a 7-2 win.
GAME ONE RECAP:
FINAL: Albany State Rams 5 (W: A. McGowan, 2-9), Nova Southeastern Sharks 4 (L: L. Storrer, 7-7)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Sharks were the first to reach the scoreboard, taking a 1-0 lead. Leadoff batter Miriam Schmolldoubled to left field and a sacrifice bunt by Lexie Storreradvanced her to third before a groundout by Sydney Casteelwas just enough to bring her home.
The Golden Rams answered with tying things up the next half inning, as
Aryn McGowan homered.
In the top of the 5
thNSUsingle allowed the runner to make it all the way to third to put runners on the corners. Suka Van Gurp, scored both runners with a single to right field to give the Sharks a 3-1 advantage. After a fly out by Aubry Hernandezadvanced Van Gurp to second, an RBI-double by Schmoll plated Van Gurp, pushing the Sharks out to a 4-1 edge.
The Golden Rams cut the Sharks' deficit to one, 4-3, in the bottom half of the fifth inning, using an RBI-triple and an RBI-single. In the bottom of the sixth ASU tied the game with a single homer by
Lavette Tucker. In the final inning of the contest the Golden Rams secured the win as
Mikiayah Harris singled to right field to score
Keychelle Evans.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Tucker was 2-for-3 with one RBI, one scored run and one RBI
- Harris finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Terry was 1-for-3 and scored once.
- Starting pitcher Aryn McGowan collected the win, pitching all innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with fivestrikeouts.

FINAL: Nova Southeastern Sharks 7 (W: M. Schmoll, 5-3), Albany State Rams 2 (L: L. Lowery, 1-10)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Golden Rams was the first one on the scoreboard, as the home team took advantage of RBI-singles by
Jordynne Baranello and
Jala Stewart to earn a 2-0 early edge.
In the top of the third, with one out on the board and Lageyre on first, Van Gurp doubled to center to score Lageyre and cut ASU's lead to one, 2-1. After a passed ball allowed Van Gurp to advance to third and a walk drawn by Schmoll, Aubry Hernandeztied the game 2-2 with an RBI-single to left, scoring Van Gurp.
NSU grabbed its first lead of the game as Van Gurp homered for a 3-2 edge in the top of the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth inning NSU got the bats going, as Alex Suzukiled the inning off with a solo homer for a 4-2 Shark lead. The next batter was hit by a pitch and then a single by Keeley Mayerspushed her into scoring position. An RBI-double by Williams brought home Maloney, but the Golden Rams were able to catch Mayers at third, leaving just one base runner. Not happy with just one home run this game, Van Gurp stepped up to the plate to send a two-run home run out of the park, giving Nova Southeastern a 7-2 lead, the eventual winning score.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Harris was 2-for-4, recording one run and scoring twice with two homeruns and one double.
- Baranello was 1-for-3, adding one RBI, while Stewart was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
- Terry was both 1-for-3.
- Lowery recorded the loss after allowing seven runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts.
UP NEXT
The Golden Rams will next travel to Augusta, Georgia where they will face SIAC opponent Paine College on March 8-9. The first game is slated for 3 p.m. The Golden Rams will return on Saturday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
