WOMEN’S SOCCER DROPS SEASON OPENER AT VALDOSTA STATE

VALDOSTA- In what was the 2018 soccer opener for both teams, it was the Valdosta State Blazers that came away with a 5-0 triumph over Albany State University Friday evening.

The Blazers scored four first half goals on 16 shots, two courtesy of Ashley Lewis. Lewis would get the first goal of the season at the 24:26 mark on an assist from Lexie Hall. Riley Tennant then dialed up an unassisted score a little over three minutes later to give VSU a 2-0 advantage.

Hall then notched her second assist of the night when she again connected with Lewis at the 32:22 mark. Lauren Hicks then put Valdosta up 4-0 with under two minutes left in the opening stanza.

Hicks netted another score (89:26) on a setup from Hannah Swenson.

Abby Whiteside finished the game with seven saves versus the Blazers. The Golden Rams got two shots on goal in the first half but the VSU defense held them to zero in the final stanza.

Albany State (0-1) will return to action on Monday at 4pm against Shorter University in Rome, Georgia.
