MCCLENDON HITS GRAND SLAM, HOMERS TWICE IN SWEEP OF BENEDICT

Rams, Tigers to Complete Weekend Series Tomorrow at 1pm

ALBANY-The Albany State University Golden Rams opened their weekend series with a day one sweep of Benedict College Saturday afternoon at West Campus Field.

The Golden Rams took a 15-1 win in game one and shut the Tigers out 6-0 in the second outing. Ryan McClendon homered twice, including a grand slam in game one and Tyler Morris and Ben Greenstein both hit balls out the park in the opening game of the doubleheader.

Michael Reddick and Tristan Rice picked up wins, improving their starting records to 3-1 and 2-2, respectively.

For the second time in as many games, Tyler Morris hit a homer in his first at bat to put the Golden Rams on the board 1-0 in the bottom of the first. ASU picked up another run in the following inning and later reeled off five runs in the third and another six in the fourth to put the game out of reach. The fifth was the only in which Albany State failed to score and it was in their half of that inning the Tigers narrowly avoided the shutout when Skyler Sabado came in on an RBI single from Andrew McCoy.

McClendon's game one grand slam gave the Rams a 7-0 lead after three complete and Greenstein, who stepped in to pinch hit for Johnathan Cirulo in the sixth, hit a 2RBI homer for the final point spread.

The Golden Rams evened their record at 11-11 overall and 3-2 in the SIAC with the 6-0 shutout of Benedict in game two.

ASU struggled at the plate early on as they were held without a hit through three complete innings. In the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded, Lawrence Hyde hit a 2RBI single up the middle to put the Rams on the scoreboard.

After Nic Griggs led off the top of the sixth with a triple, McClendon homered to give the Rams a 4-0 advantage. Later, Hyde reached on an error which concurrently scored Cirulo from second base. Chasen Roulhac then singled to drive in Hyde for the final score.

The two teams will close out the weekend with a single nine inning game tomorrow at 1pm.
