Tigers Hold Off Albany State By a Basket

January 27, 2018

COLUMBIA, SC-Albany State University fought back from a double digit fourth quarter deficit but ultimately fell to Benedict College 80-78 Saturday afternoon.

In the early going, the two teams traded the lead eleven times before a 10-2 Benedict run put the Tigers up 32-24 with 3:52 left in the first half. They pushed their lead to double digits (40-29) after two free throws from Brandon Morris but Antoine Gresham answered with three just before the half ended and the Rams trailed by nine at the break.

Back to back layups from Rahdin Hughes and Michael Green pulled the Rams within three 48-45 with 13:18 to go but the Tigers answered with an 11-2 run to reclaim a double digit edge. ASU cut the lead to under ten points three more times in the waning minutes, the latter coming courtesy of a Green three-pointer with 1:59 left, making the score 70-63.

Hughes scored seven straight points, single handedly cutting the Tigers' lead to just two, 72-70 with 1:10 left in regulation. The Tigers went up 80-72 after a bucket and converting 6 of 6 from the charity stripe, attempting to ice the game with 10 ticks left. Jared Harrington hit two threes in the closing seconds, the second one coming off a BC turnover as the game expired. Harrington finished the afternoon with a game high 21 points off the bench for Albany State.

The Tigers got a team best 17 points from Morris as Benedict improves to 16-5 overall and 9-4 in SIAC play.

ASU shot nearly 50% from the field on Saturday (49.2) and outscored Benedict in bench production 44-23.

The Golden Rams will take on Claflin on Monday night in Orangeburg, SC. Game time is scheduled for 7:30pm.
