Lady Rams split doubleheader with Claflin

ORANGEBURG, Ga.- The Albany State women's softball team opened its three-game series with Claflin in exciting fashion. The doubleheader on Saturday started with ASU taking a 9-7 win that had to be determined in nine innings. However, the Lady Rams had to settle for a split on the day, losing Game 2 6-3.
 
With the split, Albany State owns an 8-13 overall mark and 4-1 SIAC record. Claflin improves to 10-12, 1-1.

The Lady Rams took an early lead in the top of the first inning. Malea Maye hit a two-run homer to score her and Jade Williams and give the team a 2-0 lead. Claflin answered in the bottom of the inning by scoring four runs to take lead.
 
The Lady Panthers added another run in the bottom of the third before ASU scored more runs in the top of the fourth. After Toni Coleman and Jala Stewart registered singles, Brianna Murillo batted Coleman in with a double to make the score 5-3. A run by Stewart from Tiffany Massey's bunt cut the Lady Rams deficit to 5-4. Claflin scored a run in the inning to push its lead to 6-4.
 
Albany State managed to move closer in the top of the fifth inning. Coleman smashed a double and scored Danielle Turner for a 6-5 deficit.
 
In the seventh inning, the Lady Rams were able to reclaim the lead. Coleman hit another double allowing Maye and Kayla Alexander to score for a 7-6 lead. However, the Lady Panthers scored to send the game into extra innings.
 
After a scoreless eighth inning, ASU would secure its win in the top of the ninth. Malea Maye hit her second two-run homerun of the game to give Albany State a 9-7 lead. Claflin could not score in the bottom of the inning.
 
Maye finished the game with three hits and four RBIs. Coleman added three hits and three RBIs, and Stewart had two hits. Tiffany Massey was the winning pitcher.
 
The Lady Rams collected 14 hits, committed three errors and left 10 runners on base.

Albany State began its scoring in the top of the second inning. Murillo doubled to send Coleman and Maye home for a 2-0 lead. In the third, Alexander scored off a wild pitch for a 3-0 edge. Claflin scored a run of its own in the third to cut its deficit to 3-1.
 
The Lady Panthers used the fifth and sixth innings to seize the game from its guests. CU scored two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 6-3 advantage.
 
Lady Rams had only two hits for the game. They also had and error and left eight runners on base.
 
Albany State and Claflin will complete the series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
