Lady Rams earns split at SIAC Crossover

JASPER, Ala.- On the first day of the 2017 SIAC Crossover, the Albany State women's softball team earned a split. ASU dropped its first game to Kentucky State 5-2 before winning the second game against Miles College 6-2.
 
The split gives the Lady Rams a record of 9-14 and 5-2 in the SIAC.

Albany State took the lead in the top of the second inning. Jala Stewart scored off Kyera Whitaker's sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead. Kentucky State tied the game at one in the bottom of the third.
 
The Lady Rams regained the lead in the top of the sixth when Stewart scored to send Demeshia Russell home and give the team a 2-1 edge. However, KSU scored four runs in the same stanza to send ASU to defeat.
 
The Lady Rams had three hits, one error and five runners left on base. Tiffany Massey was the losing pitcher.
 
Alysha Sakamura and Katelyn Drake each recorded two hits and two RBIs for Kentucky State. Courtney Payne was the winning pitcher for the Lady Thorobreds, who recorded nine hits, an error and five LOBs.

After Miles took a 1-0 in the top of the third, ASU tied the score in the bottom of the fourth. Lavette Tucker's single scored Kayla Alexander to tie the score at one.
 
The Lady Bears reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth, but ASU seized control of the game in the bottom of the inning. Aryn McGowan singled to score Whitaker, and Coleman added a double to send McGowan and Tucker home to take a 4-1 edge. Jade Williams and Keyanna Dawson later scored on an error to end the scoring.
 
Williams went 3-for-four at the plate, and Tucker was 2-for-3 to lead Albany State. Aryn McGowan was the winning pitcher for the Lady Rams, who collected 10 hits, no errors and seven LOBs.
Miles recorded six hits, two errors and two LOBs. Culverson was the losing pitcher.
 
Albany Stat will return to action when its faces LeMoyne-Owen College (10:30 a.m.) and three-time defending SIAC tournament champion Tuskegee University (2:30 p.m.) at the crossover. All times are in the central time zone.
