Golden Rams fall short against Lane College

ALBANY, Ga.- The Albany State men's basketball team was unable to extend its winning streak to three games. ASU dropped a 74-68 decision to Lane College in a key SIAC conference matchup.
             
The loss gives the Golden Rams a 7-7 overall record and a league mark of 2-2. The Dragons improve to 7-7, 4-1.
 
After trailing most of the first half, Albany State tied the game at 26 when Jackson Lenyear connected on a basket at the 6:10 mark. Lane would use a 6-0 run to regain the lead at 32-26 with 5:09 left in the stanza. After falling behind by as many as nine points, ASU eventually trailed 41-35 at halftime.
 
In the second half, the Dragons pushed their lead back to nine, 46-37, at the 16:52 mark before the Golden Rams made another run. Devontay Ward's layup with 14:23 cut the deficit to 46-45. Two minutes later, Randy McClure scored a basket to give the home team its first lead of the game at 53-52.
 
Over the next 10 minutes, the two teams swapped the lead back and forth. With 2:01 remaining in regulation, Khaliq Hughes gave ASU a 66-66 tie with a pair of free throws. On Lane's next possession, Kendarius Ash put the visitors back in front 68-66 with 1:36 left to play.
 
Brandon Hudson's jumper tied the game for Albany State once again at 68 at the 1:02 mark, but Terrance Bridgeman's two free throws gave Lane a 70-68 edge with 48 seconds remaining. The Golden Rams' next two possessions would be costly to their chances for victory.
 
Albany State turned the ball over twice, which led to four points by the visiting team. The Dragons finished the game on a 6-0 run to stun the home team.
 
Ward led Albany State with 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Freshman Tylen Walker came off the bench to record a career-high 15 points and five rebounds. Hudson had 11 points and five rebounds, and Hughes finished with 10 points.
 
The Golden Rams shot 22-of-61 (36.1%) from the field, 4-of-19 (21.1%) from three-point range and 20-of-27 (74.1%) from the free throw line.
Maurice Alexander led Lane with a game-high 18 points. Ash recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Devontay Clark added 10 points and six rebounds.
 
The Dragons shot 26-of-76 (34.2%) from the field, 5-of-25 (20%) from three-point range and 17-of-25 (68%) from the free throw line. They also out rebounded Albany State 57-40.
 
Albany State will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 7 when it hosts Spring Hill College in an SIAC league contest. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
