Hughes’ basket lifts Golden Rams past CAU

ALBANY, Ga.- Junior guard Khaliq Hughes made the eventual game-winning basket with 10 seconds left as the Albany State men's basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak and defeated Clark Atlanta 77-75.
 
With the win, ASU improves to 8-8 overall and 4-3 in the SIAC. CAU falls to 9-7, 3-2.
 
After holding a slim 6-5 lead in the early minutes of the game, Albany State trailed for the rest of the half. Two free throws by Tajai Johnson at the 10:07 mark gave Clark Atlanta a 26-14 advantage. The Golden Rams were able to cut their deficit to 44-37 by halftime.
 
In the second half, ASU was able to surge ahead. A basket by Michael Green provided Albany State with a 56-54 edge at the 12:08 mark. Five minutes later, a pair of free throws by Brandon Hudson gave ASU a 71-63 lead.
 
However, Albany State went cold from the field, and CAU was able to use its pressure defense to get back into contention. The Panthers reclaimed the lead at 75-73 with one minute left courtesy of two free throws by Lawrence Triplett. Green was fouled on the home team's next possession, and he connected on two free throws to tie the game with 58 seconds remaining.
 
After a miss by Clark Atlanta, Khaliq Hughes came down to an attempted a jump shot that missed, put he tipped in the carom to give Albany State a 77-75 lead with 10 seconds left in regulation. Clark Atlanta got off a final shot, but it was off the mark.
 
Green finished the night with 21 points, six rebounds and two steals. Hughes added 16 points, eight rebounds and three assist.
 
The Golden Rams shot 25-of-60 (41.7%) from the field, 4-of-17 (23.5%) from three-point range and 23-of-33 (69.7%) from the free throw line.
 
Johnson led Clark Atlanta with 19 points. Harper scored 14 points, and Tim Sanders and Damien Davis added 12 points apiece.
 
The Panthers were 23-of-59 (39%) from the field, 8-of-17 (47.1%) from three-point range and 21-of-30 (70%) from the free throw line.
 
Albany State will be idle until Saturday, Jan. 14 when it hosts Paine College. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
