Golden Rams rally late to beat Paine College

ALBANY, Ga.- Khaliq Hughes recorded 13 points, five rebounds and two steals to lead a balanced attack as the Albany State men's basketball defeated Paine College 68-59. With the win, the Golden Rams improve to 9-8 overall and 4-3 in the SIAC.
 
Paine falls to 1-12, 0-7.
 
After trailing during the early minutes of the contest, Albany State was able to make a rally with its pressure defense. JaDon Davis' basket at the 12:18 mark gave ASU a 14-13 edge. The Golden Rams held the lead until Paine made a run of its own. The Lions held a 38-36 advantage at halftime.
 
In the second half, Paine was able to extend its lead before ASU made its final run to take control. A three-pointer by Jackson Lenyear gave Albany State a 55-54 edge with 10:34 left in regulation. The Golden Rams finished the game on 13-5 run to pull away in the final minutes.
 
Davis came off the bench to score 11 points for Albany State. Michael Green and High each added eight points. Green also led the team with eight rebounds.
 
The Golden Rams shot 28-of-66 (42.4%) from the field, 4-of-15 (26.7%) from three-point range and 8-of-13 (61.5%) from the free throw line.
 
Malcolm Whittington led Paine with a game-high 16 points and nine rebounds. Yusef Riley added 11 points and seven rebounds, and Kaderious Compton tallied 11 points and 10 rebounds.
 
The Lions shot 24-of-66 (36.4%) from the field, 4-of-19 (21.1%) from three-point range and 7-of-9 (77.8%) from the free throw line.
 
Albany State will return to action on Monday, Jan. 16 when it travels to Atlanta, Ga. to face Clark Atlanta University. The Golden Rams won the Jan. 9 meeting by the score of 77-75. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
