Golden Rams Baseball sweeps Morehouse in SIAC play

ATLANTA, Ga.- The Albany State baseball team managed to extend its winning streak to four games after playing a conference series. The Golden Rams defeated Morehouse College 11-8 and 17-4 on Sunday before completing the three-game series sweep of the host team in Monday's 11-7 win.
 
With the trio of wins, ASU improves to 7-23 overall, but has an SIAC record of 5-1. The Golden Rams are currently in second place in the SIAC East Division behind Paine College (5-0).
 
Morehouse falls to 12-15, 0-6.
 
 
Albany State 11, Morehouse 8
 
ASU opened the game with an early run in the first inning. Bryant Prather hit a single to score Trevor Billings and give the team a 1-0 lead. Morehouse scored a run of its own to tie the game at one in the bottom of the second inning.
 
In the top of the third inning, Sage Sammons scored on an error to give the Golden Rams a 2-1 edge. However, the Maroon Tigers scored four runs in the bottom of the stanza to take a 5-2 advantage. The home team added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning to increase its lead to 6-2.
 
Albany State was able to cut its deficit in the top of the fifth inning. Billings was able to score on an error to make the score 6-3. Reise McDaniel added another run off an error, and the Golden Rams were within two at 6-4.
 
Payton Dixon hit a single in the top of the sixth inning to score Herron Gardner to generate a 6-5 score. Morehouse added a run in the bottom of the inning to build its lead to 7-5. In the top of the seventh inning, Cody Fleck and Worthy scored runs off another MHC error, and the score was tied a seven, which produced an extra inning.
 
In the extra session, Worthy belted a double to score Austin Sheltra, McDaniel and Billings. Worthy later scored off a sac bunt from Kelvin Wimbish, and Albany State led 11-7. Morehouse could only generate one run during its final turn at bat.
 
Worthy finished the game with two hits and three RBIs. Billings, McDaniel and Dixon also had two hits apiece. The team had 12 hits and committed no errors for the game. Brian Winn was the winning pitcher.
 
 
Albany State 17, Morehouse 4
 
After going extra innings with the Maroon Tigers in the first contest, ASU didn't give its a host a fighting chance in the second game of the doubleheader.
 
Albany State opened its scoring in the first inning. Jonatan Galan hit a single to score Billings for an early 1-0 lead. In the second stanza, Payton Dixon smashed a double to score Wimbish for a 2-0 edge.
 
In the third inning, ASU started a scoring barrage that would take place over the next four innings. Dixon hit a grand slam homerun to send in four runs, and Albany State led 6-0.
 
The Golden Rams were able to generate three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Prather and Fleck each hit homeruns to give their team an 8-0 advantage. Morehouse scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the stanza.
 
In the top of the fifth inning, McDaniel's single scored Sammons, and Dixon went home off a Maroon Tiger error for two more runs. McDaniel and Billings also scored courtesy of a single by Worthy to give ASU an 11-1 lead. Five more runs in the top of the sixth inning solidified the dismantling of the home team.
 
McDaniel recorded three hits and three RBIs, and Billings and Fleck each had another three hits. Worthy added two hits and four RBIs, and Dixon collected two hits and five RBIs. ASU had 17 hits as a team and committed two errors. DaMarkus Green was the winning pitcher.
 
 
Albany State 11, Morehouse 7
 
With the score tied at one after the first quarter, the Golden Rams took the lead for good in the top of the third inning. Worthy recorded a sacrifice to score McDaniel for a 2-1 lead. In the fourth inning, Dixon's double scored Sammons. Dixon followed that play by scoring off an error to give ASU a 4-1 edge.
 
The Golden Rams added six more runs between the fifth and sixth innings to take a commanding 10-1 advantage. The team was never seriously threatened from the point.
 
McDaniel, Sammons, and Dixon each had two hits for ASU. Sammons also recorded three RBIs, and Worthy added two more RBIs. The Golden Rams generated 11 hits and committed one error. John Paul Barnard got the mound win.
 
Albany State returns to action on Tuesday, Mar. 22 when it travels to Savannah, Ga. to face Armstrong State University. The Golden Rams and Pirates split a doubleheader on Mar. 15. Armstrong won the first game 15-7, and Albany State took the nightcap 9-5. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
