Golden Rams Baseball drops road game to Armstrong

SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Albany State baseball team was unable to extend its winning streak to five games on Tuesday afternoon. ASU lost a road contest to Armstrong State University by a 6-5 score. With the loss, the Golden Rams fall to 7-24 overall.
 
Armstrong, who split a doubleheader with the Golden Rams on Mar. 15 in Albany, improves to 18-12.
 
After Armstrong took a 1-0 lead at the conclusion of the first inning, the Golden Rams got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. Reise McDaniel recorded a sacrifice fly to score Payton Dixon and tie the game at one.
 
In fourth inning, Albany State built a lead of its own. Cody Fleck scored on a fielder's choice to give the team a 2-1 edge. Then, Jonnie Benniefield and Kelvin Wimbish each scored on a Pirate throwing error to make the score 4-1 in favor of the visitors.
 
Armstrong answered with what would prove to be the deciding inning. The Pirates answered the Golden Rams' rally with five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the 6-4 lead they would not relinquish.
 
Wimbish and McDaniel led the Golden Rams with two hits apiece. Albany State collected six hits as a team and committed one error. Gary Cannon took the mound loss.
 
Albany State will host Benedict College in an SIAC three-game series Mar. 25-26. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 12 p.m. Saturday's single game will start at 1 p.m.
