Golden Rams Baseball splits with Armstrong

ALBANY, Ga.- The Albany State baseball team was able to earn a split on Tuesday afternoon. After letting the contest get away from them in Game 1, ASU fell 15-7 to Armstrong State University. The Golden Rams regrouped to take the second game by a 9-5 score.
 
Albany State is now 4-23 overall, but the team has now won three of its last four games. Armstrong is now 11-11 on the year.

After a scoreless first inning, Albany State took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. After Terrence Worthy hit a single and Juan Vidal got hit by a pitch, Cody Fleck scored everyone with a three-run homerun over the left field wall. Armstrong tied the game in top of the third inning.
 
In the fourth inning, the Golden Rams regained the lead with two runs. Sage Sammons stole home for the first run, and Herron Gardner scored on a wild pitch for 5-3 edge. The Pirates took a 6-5 lead by scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning.
 
After Armstrong added another run for a 7-5 advantage in the top of the sixth inning, Albany State rallied to tie the game. Two Golden Rams were hit by pitches, which allowed Fleck and Sammons to score and tie the game at seven all.
 
However, Albany State lost the contest in the eighth inning. Due to errors and timely hits by the Pirates, the Golden Rams gave up eight runs and could not recover to get back into contention.
 
Fleck led the team with two hits and three RBIs. Albany State recorded four hits and committed six errors. Payton Dixon was the losing pitcher.

The Pirates took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Albany State answered in the bottom of the second inning. Michael Byron hit a single to score Fleck, and the team trailed 2-1.
 
In the top of the third inning, Armstrong scored two more runs to take a 4-1 edge. The Golden Rams answered again in the bottom of the stanza. First, Worthy recorded a single to send Reise McDaniel home and cut the deficit to 4-2. Then, Jonatan Galan scored off a walk, and Bryant Prather was hit by a pitch, which scored Worthy, to tie the game at four all. Byron was then hit by a pitch and Prather went home to give Albany State a 5-4 advantage.
 
The fourth inning saw the Golden Rams increase their lead with two runs. McDaniel went home off a Pirate passed ball to put the team ahead 6-4. Galan then scored off a Prather sacrifice for a 7-4 advantage.
 
The Pirates did score another run in the top of the fifth inning. However, Albany State put the game away with two more runs of its own. Trevor Billings scored on a wild pitch, and Prather had another sacrifice to score McDaniel and account for the final score.
 
McDaniel and Prather led the team with two hits apiece. Albany State collected eight hits and committed one error for the game. Tyler Wilcher was the winning pitcher, and Brian Winn picked up the save.
 
Albany State returns to action Mar. 19-20 when it travels to Atlanta, Ga. The Golden Rams will meet Morehouse College in an SIAC three-game series. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. Sunday's single game will begin at 1 p.m.
