Golden Rams dealt heartbreaking loss at Columbus State

COLUMBUS, Ga.- Albany State received valuable contributions from several different players on Wednesday afternoon. However, in a game that produced big plays and major excitement, the Golden Rams fell 8-7 to the Columbus State Cougars in a battle that was decided in the ninth inning.
 
With the loss, ASU falls to 0-6 on the season. Columbus State improves to 3-1.
 
Albany State started the game quickly by taking an early lead. First, Theodore Smith smacked a double to score Trevor Billings for a 1-0 edge. Then, Smith was able to score off a wild pitch. A single by Nicolas Griggs sent Kelvin Wimbish home, and ASU held a 3-0 lead.
 
Columbus State would use the second and third innings to score runs and tie the game at 3-3. After scoreless innings by both teams, CSU grabbed a 5-3 advantage in the bottom of the seventh.
 
In the top of the eighth inning, the Golden Rams cut their deficit to 5-4 when Quantico Dodson-Williams scored on a throwing error. The Cougars added another run in the bottom of the inning to push their lead to 6-4.
 
The ninth inning produced a large amount of drama. Albany State was cast first in the top of the inning. Bryant Prather scored off a CSU error to make the score 6-5. Billings then belted a single to score Isaac Wilkerson, and Terrence Worthy went home courtesy of a sacrifice by Herron Gardner to put the Golden Rams ahead 7-6 going into bottom of the inning.
 
However, Columbus State was able to generate a couple of timely hits with two outs. The Cougars were able to score those runs and finished the contest by taking the 8-7 lead.
 
Billings, Smith, Wimbish and Jonatan Galan each collected two hits for the Golden Rams. John Paul Barnard was the losing pitcher. The team recorded 11 hits and committed no errors.
 
Albany State will travel to Milledgeville, Georgia Feb. 12-14 to face Georgie College in a three-game series. The game times are 4 p.m. (Friday), 2 p.m. (Saturday) and 1 p.m. (Sunday).
