ALBANY, Ga.- The Albany State Lady Rams opened the season against neighboring Georgia Southwestern University on Tuesday afternoon. Unfortunately, ASU could not pull out a victory in either of the doubleheader games. The Lady Rams lost a close contest 3-1 in the series opener before being upended in the last game 11-2.
While Albany State now owns an 0-2 record, Georgia Southwestern improves to 3-3 overall.
Georgia Southwestern 3, Albany State 1
After two scoreless innings, GSW scored two runs in the top of the third inning. During the defensive duel, the Lady Hurricanes scored what they believed was an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning for a 3-0.Â
The Lady Rams made things interesting in the bottom of the inning. Candace Blair belted a double to score Kyera Whitaker to cut ASU's deficit to 3-1. However, the team could not capitalize on the rest of its batters to gain the victory. Albany State collected four hits during the contest and also committed one error. Tiffany Massey was the losing pitcher. Erin Steele and Mikela Barlow each had two hits for the Lady Hurricanes. Haley Goodson was the winning pitcher.

Georgia Southwestern 11, Albany State 2
After the Lady Hurricanes took a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first inning, ASU tied the game in the bottom of the inning. First, Massey scored off a passed ball to cut the deficit to 2-1. Blair then scored off a walk to tie the score at two.
However, the Albany State bats went cold from that point. Georgia Southwestern scored another run in the top of the second, four in the fifth and four in the sixth inning to pull away from the home team.
Massey led the team with two hits. The Lady Rams only had four hits for the game and committed five errors. Ambrionna Atkism was credited with the mound loss. Hayley Tierce led GSW with two hits and five RBIs, while Hayley Tierce was the winning pitcher.
Albany State returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 14 when it hosts Rollins College in a doubleheader. Game times are slated for 2 and 4 p.m.
