Late errors costly to Golden Rams in loss to Valdosta State

ALBANY, Ga.- Jonatan Galan recorded three hits and two RBIs, but Albany State could not overcome a barrage of errors late in the game. The Golden Rams took the lead in the contest, but their multiple miscues down the stretch factored into their 13-7 loss to in-state rival Valdosta State University.

With the loss, ASU falls to 0-5 overall. Valdosta State, who beat the Golden Rams 4-2 on February 2nd in Valdosta, improves to 5-2.

The two teams battled to a scoreless tie for the first two innings. Valdosta State scored its first run in the top of the third inning courtesy of an Albany State error.

The Golden Rams used the fourth and fifth innings to take the lead. In the fourth, Galan hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Kelvin Wimbish and tie the game at one. The fifth inning saw Payton Dixon score off a Blazer error and provide ASU with a 2-1 edge.

In the top of sixth inning, the Blazers exploded for five runs to take a 6-2 advantage. Albany State answered in the bottom of the inning with four runs of its own. Galan's single to right field scored Quantico Dodson-Williams to make the score to 6-3.

With the bases loaded, Nicolas Griggs was walked in to add another run to the Golden Rams' rally. Galan then scored on a wild pitch, which was followed by Theodore Smith's single that sent Herron Gardner home. The score was tied at six heading into the seventh inning.

Terrence Worthy and Griggs combined to give ASU the lead again in the bottom of the seventh. Worthy singled to score Griggs and give the team a 7-6 edge.

The eighth inning is where Albany State met its downfall. Several errors by the home team led to six Valdosta State runs and a 12-7 deficit. The Blazers added another run in the final inning to end the scoring.

Billings finished the game with two hits and two RBIs. He was also the losing pitcher for the Golden Rams, who collected 11 hits as a team and committed eight errors.
