Lady Rams extend win streak with OT win over Claflin

ORANGEBURG, S.C.- Senior Keidra Green played all 45 minutes and scored a team-high 15 points to lead the Albany State Lady Rams to a 68-59 overtime win over the Claflin Lady Panthers. The victory extends ASU's winning streak to four games and improves its overall record to 8-9. The team is also 8-1 in the SIAC and remains in a first place tie in the east division with Benedict College.
 
Albany State started the contest in blazing fashion. Green and Kyasha Wilson connected on three three-pointers to give the Lady Rams an early 9-3 lead. By the period's end, the Lady Rams held a 19-10 advantage.
 
However, ASU cooled off in the second quarter and Claflin was able to close the gap. Artisha Holston's jumper with 18 seconds left in the stanza put the Lady Rams ahead 32-24. The Lady Panthers received an answer from Shaniece Brown. Her three-pointer with eight seconds remaining generated a 32-27 score in favor of the visitors at halftime.
 
In the third quarter, the two teams continued to play a highly-competitive game. Wilson's basket pushed the ASU lead to 40-32 at the 4:48 mark. Claflin would then use an 8-0 over the next two minutes to tie the game at 40. With the scored tied at 42, Ieshia Young scored to put the Lady Rams in back in front by the period's end.
 
Both teams remained competitive in the fourth quarter. With the Lady Panthers leading 48-47, Zuri Frost made one of two free throws to tie the game at 48. Claflin answered with a four-point run to take a 52-48 edge with 1:44 remaining in regulation.
 
A free throw by Holston and a jumper by Frost brought the Lady Rams within one, 52-51, at the 1:08 mark. With 35 seconds left, Green made two free throws to put ASU ahead 53-52. CU regained the lead at 55-53 with only 12 seconds left to play.
 
Attempting to tie the score and extend the contest, Frost missed, but Green tipped the ball back in with two seconds left to send the game into overtime.
 
In the extra session, Albany State received contributions from several players to put the game out of reach for Claflin. Green and Holston opened the overtime with key baskets, and Young and Frost made clutch free throws down the stretch. The Lady Rams outscored the home team 13-4 in the period.
 
 
Holston finished with 14 points and seven rebounds, and Young recorded 14 points. Wilson added 10 points and led the team with nine rebounds. Frost chipped in with nine points and five assists.
 
The Lady Rams shot 24-of-57 (42.1%) from the field, 4-of-12 (33.3%) from three-point range and 16-of-22 (72.7%) from the free throw line. ASU's defense forced Claflin into 22 turnovers.
 
Joy Okeke led Claflin with 15 points. Carnique Marks and Shaniece Brown added 11 points apiece.
 
Albany State returns to action when it travels to Columbia, S.C. to face the Benedict Lady Tigers (18-1, 8-1) in a battle for SIAC East supremacy. The winner will take a first place lead in the division. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
