Lady Rams can’t tame Benedict Lady Tigers

COLUMBIA, S.C.- Zuri Frost recorded 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists, but the Albany State Lady Rams could not keep their first- place tie in the SIAC East Division. ASU lost the battle for the top spot when it dropped an 82-53 decision to Benedict College, the 15th-ranked team in NCAA Division II.
 
The loss gives the Lady Rams an overall record of 8-10 and league mark of 8-2. The team is now in second place in the division. Benedict improves to 19-1, 9-1.
 
For a quarter, Albany State gave Benedict all it could handle. In the fast-paced period, the Lady Rams and BC swapped the lead on several occasions before ASU took a 24-23 at the end of the stanza.
 
The second period is when the Lady Rams fell out of contention. Albany State only scored two points in the second quarter, while the Lady Tigers generated 26 of their own. ASU was behind 49-26 at halftime.
 
In the second half, Albany State was able to slow down the Benedict scoring. However, they could not create anymore offense to make a serious run.
 
The Lady Rams shot 22-for-57 (38.6%) from the field, 4-of-10 (40%) from three-point range and 5-for-10 from the free throw line. The team also committed 22 turnovers.
 
Terri Jacobs led Benedict with a game-high 30 points, and Regime McCombs had 21 points. Destiny Betts added 12 points and 15 rebounds.
 
Albany State returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 28 when it hosts Miles College at ASU HPER Gymnasium. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
