Golden Rams rally past top-seeded Benedict, advances to SIAC semifinals

Columbia, S.C.- Terrence Worthy recorded three hits to lead the Albany State Golden Rams to 9-5 win over the top-seeded Benedict Tigers in the second round of the 2015 SIAC Baseball Championship Tournament. With the victory, ASU, the No. 3 seed from the East Division, advances in the winner's bracket to face the West's No. 1 seed Stillman Tigers, who defeated Claflin 6-5 to advance.

The Golden Rams improve to 18-31 overall, while Benedict falls to 23-16. The Tigers fall to the loser's bracket where they will face Tuskegee.

After spotting a 3-0 lead to Benedict in the first inning, Albany State began its rally in the top of the third inning. Taking advantage of some walks coupled with Tiger pitching errors the Golden Rams were able to tie the game. Sable Gilliard scored off a fielder's choice, and Reise McDaniel and Ryan Latner went home after a passed ball and wild pitch, respectively.

In the fifth inning, after Jonatan Galan walked, both Worthy and Hector Carrasquillo belted singles. Allen Hardy used a sacrifice hit to send Galan home, and Albany State held a 4-3 edge after the inning.

The Golden Rams started pulling away from the top seed in the top of the seventh with a four-run inning. Worthy ended up on third base after he recorded a double and advance off a Benedict throwing error. Hardy walked, and Emmanuel Santos followed with a double of his own to score both Worthy and Hardy. McDaniel smashed a triple to right field to send Santos home, and Latner added a single to score McDaniel to help the Golden Rams build an 8-3 advantage.

In the top of the ninth, both Santos and Gilliard opened with singles. Santos scored off another Benedict error to give his team an insurance run and a 9-3 edge. The Tigers did score two runs in the bottom of the inning, but a spectacular catch by McDaniel against the field's wall ended their comeback hopes.

Santos finished the game with two hits and two RBIs. McDaniel added two hits, and Latner had two RBIs.

DeMarkus Green was the winning pitcher with four strikeouts and only two walked batters. Green entered the game at the top of the second inning and did not give up a hit during his first four stanzas.

The Golden Rams collected 12 hits and committed four errors.

Due to inclement weather, Albany State will resume tournament play against Stillman on Sunday, April 26 at Capitol City Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.  Claflin will face Miles College in the other loser's bracket contest.
