Miles College Outlast Albany State in Opening Round of SIAC Softball Tournament

Columbia, S.C.—Miles College outlasted Albany State in the opening round of the 2015 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) softball tournament, defeating the Lady Rams 14-12, in eight innings.  The double-elimination tournament, which is being contested at the Polo Road Park in Columbia, S.C., will run thru Saturday, Apr. 25 with a rain date of Sunday, Apr. 26.

Miles College jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the top of the first.  Albany State battled strong in its half of the inning putting up four runs to cut the deficit to two, 4-6.  The Bears put up one run in the third to increase its lead to three, 7-4, and what looks like control of the game.  The Lady Rams would not be through as they scored one run in fourth and one in the fifth to cut the lead to one run, 6-7.  After Miles College put up three more runs in the top of the sixth, Albany State countered with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 10-all.  Neither team would score in the seventh sending the game into extra innings.  In the eighth, the Lady Bears offense remained alive scoring four runs to break the tie.  Albany State put up two runs in the bottom of the eighth but could not score any more, thus falling by the two run margin.

Kendreuna McPherson went 3-for-4 with three runs to lead Miles.  Talana Brown went all eight innings en route to picking up the win.

Anria Peterson had three runs with three hits, including a homerun and one RBI to lead Albany State.   Alexa Lopez was the losing pitcher of record.  In all, the Lady Rams had four homeruns on the day.

Miles will face Kentucky State at 12 noon tomorrow, Friday, Apr. 23 while Albany State will face Claflin University in the elimination game tomorrow.  Both games will be played at Polo Road Park.
