Golden Rams complete season sweep of archrival FVSU

Fort Valley, GA- Forward Chris Wheeler led a balanced attack with 14 points and six rebounds to lead the Albany State Golden Rams to an 80-74 victory over the Fort Valley State Wildcats. With the win, Albany State snaps a five-game losing streak and improves to 9-16 overall and 5-13 in the SIAC. FVSU falls to 3-22, 3-15.
 
The two rivals engaged in a close contest for a large portion of the first half. After battling to a 21 all tie, Albany State used a 13-2 run to take a 34-24 lead at the 7:33 mark. Fort Valley State cut its deficit to 40-34 with 4:21 remaining in the stanza, but the Golden Rams ended the half on a 12-3 spurt to take a 52-37 edge into intermission.
 
In the second half, Darshtyn Baker scored a basket to give ASU its biggest lead of the game, 59-37, with 17:39 left in regulation. However, the Golden Rams went cold from the field and the free throw line, and FVSU took advantage. The Wildcats cut ASU's lead to four points two separate occasions down the stretch, but they could not get any closer. Still ahead 78-74, Larry Bullock put Fort Valley State away with two free throws to account for the final score.
 
Bullock recorded 11 points and two steals, and Davetom Odom had 10 points and four rebounds. Demetri Wheeler, who left the game early in the second half due to an eye injury, and Junaid Olusesi both finished with eight points and seven rebounds. Dominique Pollard also netted eight points. Baker added seven points, seven rebounds and four assists from the point guard position.
 
The Golden Rams shot 29-of-71 (40.8%) from the field, 6-of-17 (35.3%) from three-point range, and 16-of-25 (64%) from the free throw line.
 
Albany State will close out the regular season on Monday, February 23 when it hosts the Morehouse Maroon Tigers. Morehouse won the initial meeting 70-68 on February 5. The program will also observe "Senior Night" before the game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
