Golden Rams fall in season opener at Valdosta State

Valdosta, Ga.- The Albany State Golden Rams committed five turnovers and only yielded 206 yards of total offense, and both areas proved to be costly. The Golden Rams fell in their season opener to in-state rival Valdosta State 38-10 at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. With the loss, ASU begins the 2014 season with a 0-1 record. VSU starts the year at 1-0.
 
Both teams battled each other defensively in the first quarter with neither team gaining a clear advantage. With 2:10 remaining in the first quarter, VSU took an early 3-0 lead thanks to a 45-yard field goal. After an interception by Albany State's
Frank Rivers, Valdosta State would drive again and score on a 13-yard touchdown pass to increase its lead to 10-0 with 11:59 left before halftime.
 
VSU would score again at the 1:16 mark of the second quarter with a 4-yard rushing touchdown, and Albany State trailed 17-0 at intermission.
 
In the third stanza, another ASU turnover set up another Blazer scoring drive. Valdosta State scored on an 8-yard touchdown to build its lead to 24-0 with 13:39 left to play in the period. Albany State kicker
Zachary Gayden-Holley finally put the Golden Rams on the scoreboard with a 26-yard field goal at the 6:51 mark. ASU trailed 24-3 at the end of the third period.
 
With 12:52 remaining in the fourth quarter, VSU scored again on an 8-yard touchdown pass to take a 31-3 advantage. Rivers' 15-yard pass to
Jessie Atkins provided ASU with its first touchdown of the game. It came with 8:11 left in the game, and the Golden Rams cut their deficit to 31-10.
 
The Blazers quickly answered when they returned the kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown to take a 38-10 advantage and account for the final score of the game.
 
Rivers completed 20-35 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown.
Yancy Burns recorded five receptions for 47 yards.
 
Defensively, linebacker
Tavarius Washington led Albany State with 13 tackles, 10 of which were solo. Larry Whitfield added nine tackles (five solo) and a pass breakup.
 
Albany State will return to action on Saturday, September 13th when they take on Tuskegee University in the 2014 Whitewater Classic in Phenix City, Alabama. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
