Golden Rams' comeback falls short against Tuskegee

Phenix City, Al.- Running back Jarvis Small rushed 23 times for 161 yards, but the Albany State Golden Rams were unable to defeat the Tuskegee Golden Tigers. Despite a late comeback attempt, the Golden Rams fell 20-12 in the 1st annual White Water Classic. With the loss, ASU falls to 0-2 on the season, while TU improves to 1-1.
 

After a scoreless first quarter between the two teams, Albany State scored the first points of the game at the 5:56 mark of the second quarter. Quarterback Frank Rivers found Yancy Burns for a 37-yard touchdown to give ASU a 7-0 after Zachary Gayden-Holley's successful PAT. Tuskegee answered with a 22-yard field goal with 2:01 left to play in the half. The Golden Rams led 7-3 at halftime.
 

In the third period, TU took a 10-7 lead with 13:19 remaining courtesy of an 8-yard rushing touchdown.  At the 6:05 mark, the Golden Tigers used a 4-yard touchdown pass to increase their lead to 17-7.  A 41-yard field goal by Tuskegee with 3:06 left in the quarter made the score 20-7 heading into the final stanza.
 

With 13:51 remaining in the fourth quarter, Albany State took advantage of Tuskegee's miscue on its punt attempt and was awarded a safety to close the gap to 20-9. Over six minutes later, Gayden-Holley connected on a 21-yard field goal to bring the Golden Rams closer, 20-12. ASU had a chance to tie the game on its final possession, but the team could not find the end zone to make a successful comeback.
 

Rivers finished 16-37 passing for 164 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver Devonta Osborne caught five passes for 62 yards.
 

Defensively, Tavarius Washington led the Golden Rams with nine tackles (seven solo), and Cedric Ashe added six solo tackles. Cedric Ashe also had six tackles, five of which were solo.
 

Albany State will have an open date before returning to action on Saturday, September 27th when it faces SIAC opponent Miles College in Albany at Albany Municipal Coliseum. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
