Golden Rams' defense shuts down Miles

Albany, Ga.- Junior linebacker Tavarius Washington recorded a game-high 13 tackles (11 solo) and a forced fumble to lead the Albany State Golden Rams to a 14-7 victory over the Miles College Golden Bears. With the victory, ASU picks up its first win of the season and improves its record to 1-2. Miles falls to 1-3 on the year.

The Golden Rams took an early lead in the first quarter when
Zachary Gayden-Holley completed a 9-play, 63-yard drive with a 2-yard rushing touchdown at the 4:58 mark. Zachary Gayden-Holley added the PAT, and ASU led 7-0.

With 13:38 remaining in the second quarter and the Golden Bears threatening to score from the ASU 3-yard line,
Larry Whitfield forced a fumble from Miles quarterback Demetric Price. Albany State safety Fred Holton recovered the fumble and returned it 97 yards for a touchdown. Gayden Holley's PAT was good, and Albany State had a 14-0 advantage.

Four minutes and a half minutes later, Miles would answer with a 9-yard touchdown to cut its deficit to 14-7. That score would account for the final tally, as the Golden Rams' defense was steady enough to keep the Golden Bears off the scoreboard for the rest of the game.

Rivers finished 14-22 for 142 yards.
Jarvis Small rushed 20 times for 106 yards, his second consecutive game with at least 100 yards. Freshman wide receiver Yancy Burns caught five passes for 70 yards.

Defensively,
Nick Scott added eight tackles, and Whitfield had seven tackles (six solo), a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.

The Albany State Golden Rams return to action on Saturday, October 11th when it travels to Augusta, Georgia to face the Paine College Lions. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
