Gaines, Williams power Golden Rams past Benedict

Box Score COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA- Senior forwards Jamorris Gaines and Joe Williams scored 20 points apiece to lead the Albany State Golden Rams to an 80-68 victory over the Benedict College Tigers. With the win, ASU improves to 9-11, 6-6 in the SIAC. Benedict falls to 13-8, 8-5.

Albany State came out in the first half and jumped on the Tigers, leading 6-0 thanks to three-pointers by James Lodman, Jr. and Gaines. Benedict took its first lead of the game at 14-12 with 13:26 left before halftime.

The Golden Rams would ignite after the Tiger run. Despite severe foul trouble, Albany State used a 19-5 run to take 31-19 lead with 8:48 left in the stanza. Another key run, 13-8, pushed ASU to its largest lead of the game, 44-27, at the 4:42 mark. Albany State lead 47-37 at intermission.

In the second half, Albany State found more foul trouble, and Benedict took advantage. The Tigers opened the half on a 14-4 run to tie the score at 51 with 15:02 left in regulation. The Golden Rams went on a 6-0 run to restore their lead at 60-54 at the 12:24 mark.

A basket by Gaines at the 8:33 mark gave the Golden Rams another double digit lead, 66-56. Darshtyn Baker's free throws with 1:27 left in the game put ASU up 80-64 and helped seal the win.

Williams and Gaines also pulled down 10 and six rebounds, respectively. Williams added four blocks. Larry Bullock scored 11 points off the bench for the Golden Rams.

Albany State shot 31-46 (67.1%) from the field, 8-15 (53.3%) from three-point range and 10-14 (71.4%) from the free throw line. The Golden Rams outrebounded the Tigers 36-16.

Albany State returns to action on Monday, February 10th when they travel to Augusta, Georgia to face the Paine College Lions. The Golden Rams won the initial meeting 78-68. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m
