In 44 years as head women’s basketball coach, Robert Skinner has proved to be one of the most respected coaches in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) where he has a 612-586 overall coaching record.
Coach Skinner was been coaching for 44 years overall with 33 years at Albany State University (ASU). He has secured a 1408-1288-2 overall coaching record.
Coach Skinner took over as helm of the women’s basketball program in 1991. Before coming to Albany State University, Skinner was at Paine College where he served as head coach for 11 years (1980-1911) where he recorded a 160-165 overall record. In his first year as head of the Golden Rams women’s basketball program the team finished with a 20-9 overall record.
During the 1995-96 campaign, the Golden Rams women’s baseball team won its first Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship and earned a trip to the NCAA South Region tournament. In 1997-98, the women’s basketball team won its second SIAC championship for the second consecutive year and advantaging its season to post season play. The Golden Rams collected another SIAC championship in 2014-15 where the Golden Rams finished with a 19-10 overall record.
In addition to coaching women’s basketball in his first year he also served as the head volleyball coach and held the title until 2018. Under his leadership, the Golden Rams has won five (5) SIAC championships and has made eight (8) NCAA tournament appearances. Skinner has won championship in 1998 and from 2001-2009. In his first year the women’s volleyball team finished with a 23-10 overall record. The last year the Golden Rams won a championship the team finished with a 21-10 overall record. Skinner has collected a 445-301 overall coaching record in women’s volleyball.
Robert Skinner has also served as head softball coach from 2001-2016. Under his leadership, the Golden Rams has won five (5) SIAC championships and has made five (5) NCAA tournament appearances. Coach Skinner has won championships in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2012. The Golden Rams won three consecutive SIAC championships from 2007-2009. During the 2005-06 season the Golden Rams finished with a 26-35 overall. Skinner coached softball for 14 years and secured a 351-401-2 overall record.
Skinner is a native of Paducah, Kentucky, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and a minor in Athletic Coaching from Murray State University. Over the years Coach Skinner has received numerous SIAC conference honors and awards. He is a member of the Women Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and serves on the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Committee.
