Jason Townsend joined the Albany State University baseball coaching staff in January 2024, bringing an exceptional level of experience and expertise to the program. A native of Albany, GA, Townsend’s journey in baseball is a testament to his dedication and passion for the sport, and his deep ties to the local community make him a valuable addition to the Golden Rams family.
Townsend is a 2007 graduate of Sherwood Christian Academy, where he was a standout multi-sport athlete, excelling in both football and baseball. His exceptional talent on the mound earned him the opportunity to pitch at Chipola Junior College, one of the most prestigious junior college baseball programs in the country, under legendary Coach Jeff Johnson. During his time at Chipola, Townsend honed his skills and further solidified his reputation as a formidable pitcher.
After two successful seasons at Chipola, Townsend transferred to the University of Alabama, where he continued to thrive as a key member of the Crimson Tide baseball program. In 2010, Townsend’s hard work and talent were recognized when he was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 31st round of the MLB Draft.
Townsend spent five seasons in the Pirates organization, where he competed at the professional level and showcased his ability to perform against elite competition. Unfortunately, an arm injury ultimately forced him to retire from professional baseball, but his passion for the game remained steadfast.
Now, as the Assistant Baseball Coach at Albany State, Townsend is tasked with leading the Golden Rams’ pitching staff. His extensive playing experience at the collegiate and professional levels, combined with his deep understanding of the game, makes him an invaluable resource for developing ASU’s talented pitchers.
Head Coach Scot Hemmings praised Townsend’s impact on the program, stating, "We are very fortunate to be able to hire Jason to lead our pitching staff, especially mid-year. He has a wealth of knowledge and was an outstanding pitcher at every level. He will relate well to the players and bring energy and passion to take this talented staff to a new level."

His return to his hometown and his commitment to helping student-athletes succeed both on and off the field reflect his dedication to fostering the next generation of baseball talent.
