Benjamin Carlson is currently in his first year as an assistant coach for the Albany State University Rams. His primary roles are as the Ram’s pitching coach and weight room coordinator. This is Carlson’s first full year of coaching at the NCAA Division II level after serving as the pitching coach for the Woodstock River Bandits in the Valley Baseball League in the summer of 2015.
Prior to the start of his coaching career, he attended and pitched for Spartanburg Methodist College (2011) in Spartanburg, SC and Furman University (2015) in Greenville, SC, serving as a starting pitcher until his senior when he moved to the bullpen as a setup/closer. Following the spring of 2013, Carlson was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 40th round. In his rookie year for the Arizona League Angels and Orem Owlz, Carlson compiled a 4-1 record with a 2.76 ERA with 10 saves in 24 games, which earned him the rookie league all-star title for all relievers in the league. 2014 was Carlson's last year in professional baseball with the Burlington Bees (Midwest League) in which he appeared in a league leading 52 games on his way to having a final stat line of 3-2, 2.60 ERA and 14 saves in 65.2 innings pitched.
Carlson earned his B.S. in Health Sciences from Furman University in Greenville, SC.
