ALBANY, Ga. – The Albany State University women's volleyball team opened play in the Black Excellence Volleyball Circuit Showcase with a commanding 3-0 sweep over Virginia Union University on Friday afternoon inside Jones Brothers HPER Gym.
The Lady Golden Rams controlled the match from start to finish, taking the three sets 25-16, 25-21 and 25-17 to improve to 2-3 on the season.
Albany State put together its most efficient offensive performance of the young season, finishing with 32 kills and just eight attack errors on 69 attempts for a .348 hitting percentage. The Lady Golden Rams also totaled 31 digs, four service aces and 10 total blocks, including two solo blocks.
Jarianis Perez led the Albany State attack with a match-high 11 kills while hitting an impressive .500 on 16 attempts. Perez also contributed 10 digs to complete a double-double.
Amiria Anderson followed closely behind with 10 kills on 24 attempts and a .333 hitting percentage, while Maya Ogbogu provided an efficient presence at the net with three kills on four attempts for a .750 hitting percentage. Ogbogu also recorded two solo blocks and one block assist. Shaniya Banks added three kills and two block assists.
The Lady Golden Rams came out firing in the opening set, recording 10 kills with just one error on 17 attacks for a .529 hitting percentage. Albany State used that efficiency to establish control early and cruise to a 25-16 opening-set victory.
Virginia Union challenged Albany State in the second set, which featured six ties and three lead changes. Despite the back-and-forth battle, the Lady Golden Rams held off the Panthers for a 25-21 win to take a 2-0 advantage in the match. Albany State then closed the door in the third, hitting .381 with 10 kills and only two errors on 21 attempts on its way to a 25-17 victory and the straight-set sweep.
Defensively, Myra Lopez led Albany State with 11 digs, while Perez added 10. Liannette Burgos directed the offense with 14 assists, while Trinity Britt added nine and Onyinyechi Nwosu contributed six.
Albany State will continue action in the Black Excellence Volleyball Circuit Showcase on Saturday, Sept. 5, inside Jones Brothers HPER Gym. The Lady Golden Rams will face Savannah State at 9 a.m. before closing out the showcase against Clinton College at 3 p.m.
