ALBANY, Ga. – The Albany State University women's volleyball team put together a strong Saturday showing inside Jones Brothers HPER Gym, earning victories over Savannah State University and Clinton College to close out its weekend at the Black Excellence Volleyball Circuit Showcase.
The Lady Golden Rams opened Saturday with a four-set victory over Savannah State, 25-8, 25-16, 17-25, 25-15, before returning later in the day to sweep Clinton, 25-11, 25-13, 25-17. The two victories improved Albany State to 4-3 overall.
Albany State 3, Savannah State 1
Albany State came out firing against Savannah State, taking control early with a dominant 25-8 victory in the opening set. The Lady Golden Rams followed with a 25-16 win in the second set to take a 2-0 advantage.
Savannah State responded in the third set with a 25-17 victory, but Albany State quickly regained control. The Lady Golden Rams closed out the match with a 25-15 win in the fourth set to secure the 3-1 victory.
Jarianis Perez led a balanced Albany State attack with eight kills while hitting .353, along with seven digs and two service aces. Amiria Anderson added seven kills on a .316 hitting percentage, while Shaniya Banks finished with six kills and hit .444. Maya Ogbogu and Serenity Jackson each contributed five kills.
The Lady Golden Rams were especially effective from the service line, recording 14 aces. Myra Lopez, Liannette Burgos and Trinity Britt each recorded three aces, while Perez and Jaelynn Brown added two apiece. Burgos also dished out a team-high 21 assists, while Britt added 10.
As a team, Albany State finished with 42 kills and only 12 attack errors on 101 attempts for a .297 hitting percentage. The Lady Golden Rams also totaled 38 digs and 24 total blocks assists in the victory.
Albany State 3, Clinton 0
Albany State carried its momentum into the afternoon matchup against Clinton, controlling the match from start to finish.
The Lady Golden Rams took the opening set 25-11 before extending their advantage with a 25-13 victory in the second. Albany State completed the straight-set win with a 25-17 victory in the third.
Banks delivered one of the strongest offensive performances of the day, finishing with a match-high 10 kills without an attack error on 13 attempts for a .769 hitting percentage. She also recorded three solo blocks and three block assists to finish with a match-high 14.5 points.
Perez added six kills, eight digs and four block assists, while Jackson recorded five kills on eight attempts for a .625 hitting percentage. Ogbogu contributed four kills without an error, hitting .667 and adding four block assists.
Burgos and Britt directed the offense with 13 and 14 assists, respectively. Burgos also led Albany State from the service line with five aces.
Albany State finished the match hitting .353 as a team with 32 kills and only eight errors on 68 attempts. The Lady Golden Rams were particularly efficient through the first two sets, hitting .563 in the opening frame and .526 in the second.
With the two victories, Albany State improves to 4-3 on the season, including a four game wining streak. The Lady Golden Rams will return to action on Tuesday, September 8th when they travel to compete in the UWA Invitational against West Alabama.
