Milledgeville, Ga. – The Albany State University volleyball team closed out the Bobcat Classic on a high note Saturday evening, earning its first win over Georgia College in program history as the Lady Golden Rams split a pair of matches on the final day of the tournament.
Albany State (1-3) opened Saturday with a 3-0 setback against Southern Wesleyan before responding with a 3-1 victory over tournament host Georgia College. The Lady Golden Rams took the match by scores of 25-22, 17-25, 25-16 and 25-21.
Head Volleyball Coach Verniece Graham was proud of the way her team competed throughout the weekend and highlighted the significance of closing the tournament with the program's first victory over Georgia College.
Southern Wesleyan 3, Albany State 0
Albany State began the day against Southern Wesleyan, falling in straight sets, 13-25, 15-25 and 20-25.
Amiria Anderson led the Lady Golden Rams offensively with nine kills on 17 attacks without an error, finishing with a .529 hitting percentage. Maya Ogbogu added five kills while hitting .500.
Liannette Burgos recorded a team-high 12 assists and six digs, while Jarianis Perez finished with nine digs. Myra Lopez added eight digs, and Onyinyechi Nwosu contributed four assists and Albany State's lone service ace.
The Lady Golden Rams finished the match with 25 kills, 24 assists and 41 digs.
Albany State 3, Georgia College 1
Albany State bounced back in the nightcap with a historic performance against Georgia College.
The Lady Golden Rams grabbed the opening set 25-22 before Georgia College evened the match with a 25-17 win in the second. Albany State responded with one of its strongest sets of the weekend, taking the third 25-16 before finishing the Bobcats off with a 25-21 victory in the fourth.
Anderson once again paced the Albany State attack, finishing with a team-high 12 kills and six digs. Perez delivered an all-around performance with nine kills, 16 digs and two service aces, while Ogbogu and Shaniya Banks each added seven kills and hit .333. Ogbogu also contributed four block assists.
Trinity Britt led the Lady Golden Rams with 13 assists, while Burgos added 12. Nwosu contributed six assists and nine digs, and Lopez recorded 12 digs, four assists and a service ace.
As a team, Albany State totaled 42 kills, 36 assists, 62 digs, five service aces and eight block assists in the victory.
