Albany, Ga. — Albany State Athletics has officially welcomed back Sylvester Patterson as Assistant Women's Basketball Coach, bringing a familiar face and a wealth of coaching experience back to the Lady Golden Rams program.
Patterson returns to Albany State after previously serving as an assistant coach for the women's basketball program from 2021 to 2024 under former head coach Robert Skinner and during the 2024-25 season under head coach Akia Stanton.
During his first stint with the Lady Golden Rams, Patterson played an important role in player development and recruiting, and in strengthening the program's culture.
Before returning to Albany State, Patterson served as the head women's basketball coach at Southern Crescent Technical College, continuing a coaching career that has spanned both the junior college and NCAA Division II levels.
Patterson brings more than familiarity with Albany State — he returns with a proven track record of success and student-athlete development. Before joining Albany State in his initial tenure, Patterson built one of the region's most respected junior college men's basketball programs as head men's basketball coach at Albany Technical College.
Appointed as head coach in 2007, Patterson transformed the program into a consistent postseason contender within the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA). Over his tenure, he compiled 181 career victories and led the team to three GCAA semifinal appearances. In just his second season at the helm, Patterson guided the program to a 20-win season, laying the foundation for a culture centered around discipline, accountability, and player development.
His impact extended far beyond wins and losses. Under Patterson's leadership, 57 student-athletes continued their playing careers at four-year institutions, while 12 players earned All-Conference honors. His dedication to helping student-athletes succeed academically, athletically, and personally became one of the defining characteristics of his coaching career.
Throughout his career, he has emphasized building relationships through youth clinics, community outreach events, open practices, and service initiatives that connect student-athletes with local families and supporters. He also brings both educational and real-world perspectives to his coaching philosophy. He emphasizes accountability, effort, discipline, and personal growth — principles he believes should shape student-athletes both on and off the court.
A native of Liberty, Patterson holds a master's degree from American Military University. Patterson and his wife, Raven, have one daughter.
