Orlando, Fla. — The Albany State women's tennis team officially opened the 2026 campaign Friday at the SIAC Roundup Tournament, competing against Tuskegee University and Clark Atlanta University on Day 1 of the three-day event. Despite strong individual performances and competitive sets throughout the day, the Lady Golden Rams concluded opening day with an 0-2 record.
Match 1: Tuskegee 6, Albany State 1
Albany State faced a tough Tuskegee squad to begin the season, falling 6-1 in the opener. The Lady Golden Rams' lone point came from
Monique Gundrum, who delivered a composed and confident singles performance to secure Albany State's first win of the season. Gundrum's consistency from the baseline and ability to control rallies stood out as a bright spot.
Brooklyn Bowens and
Ameerah Mesidor also turned in strong efforts in singles play, battling through competitive games and showing flashes of early-season promise. In doubles competition, Mesidor and La'Ashia Miller demonstrated strong chemistry and resilience, pushing their opponents and laying a solid foundation to build upon as the tournament progresses.
Match 2: Clark Atlanta 6, Albany State 1
In the second match of the day, the Lady Golden Rams showed grit and determination against Clark Atlanta but ultimately fell by another 6-1 margin. Once again, Gundrum accounted for Albany State's point in singles, remaining steady under pressure and setting the tone with her competitiveness.
Bowens, Mesidor, and
Le'Ashia Miller each showcased growth and determination in singles play, competing fiercely in extended rallies and tightly contested sets. In doubles action, the pairings of Mesidor and Gundrum, along with Bowens and Miller, highlighted the team's resilience and developing cohesion. Though the final scores did not swing in Albany State's favor, the effort and fight were evident throughout the lineup.
Up Next: Albany State returns to action for Day 2 of the SIAC Roundup Tournament at 2:00 p.m. against Spring Hill, followed by a 4:30 p.m. matchup against Savannah State as the Lady Golden Rams look to bounce back and build on their early-season progress.
