Pembroke, N.C. – The Albany State volleyball team closed out play at the UNC Pembroke Invitational Tournament on Saturday, falling to Wingate (0-3) in the morning session and Coker (0-3) in the afternoon. With the results, the Lady Golden Rams move to 0-8 overall to start the 2025 campaign.
In the opener against perennial power Wingate, Albany State showed flashes of energy and fight but could not overcome the Bulldogs' balanced attack, dropping the match in straight sets (16-25, 15-25, 15-25).
Jarianis Perez led the offense with 11 kills, while
Maya Ogbogu and
Shaniya Banks added four kills apiece. Defensively,
Myra Lopez anchored the back row with a match-high 18 digs, while Perez contributed nine digs. At the net, Perez,
Kaylin Teasley, and Banks each tallied three blocks, and
Liannette Burgos distributed the offense with 14 assists.
In the tournament finale against Coker, the Lady Golden Rams fought through extended rallies but again fell in three sets (15-25, 19-25, 17-25). Perez once again paced ASU with 10 kills and 10 digs for a double-double, while
Jayda Watson (6 kills) and Teasley (5 kills) added support offensively. Teasley also chipped in a pair of blocks along with Banks and
Cydney McKinney, while Burgos set the tone with 16 assists and
Trinity Britt added nine assists and eight digs. Lopez capped a strong weekend performance with another 16 digs in the match.
The Lady Golden Rams showed growth throughout the tournament despite the results, gaining valuable experience against strong non-conference competition.
