This Week in Albany State Athletics: Playoff Football, Championship Volleyball & Conference Basketball Begin

Albany, Ga. - The Albany State Golden Rams enter this week of competition riding a wave of highs and lows, but with tremendous momentum as multiple programs prepare for marquee matchups on the conference and national stage.

Women's Basketball opened the season with an exhibition vs. Bethune-Cookman, falling 72–84 but showing promising flashes in their first action of the year. Women's Volleyball ended the regular season on a major high note, defeating Benedict College, Edward Waters University, Savannah State, and Allen University to enter postseason play red hot.

Men's Basketball opened its 2025–26 campaign in the SIAC/GSC Challenge, going 0–2 with losses to West Alabama and Mississippi College. Football capped the week with the biggest headline of all—winning the 2025 SIAC Championship, defeating Benedict College in a 22–16 thriller, and earning the No. 1 seed in Super Region 2.

Now, the Golden Rams shift their focus to an action-packed week that features a conference championship tournament, a conference opener, and a nationally televised NCAA playoff game.

Women's Volleyball – SIAC Championship Tournament Preview
Fresh off a dominant regular-season finish, the Lady Golden Rams head to the 2025 SIAC Volleyball Championship Tournament as the No. 2 seed in the East Division. ASU will face the No. 3 seed in the West, Kentucky State, in Thursday's quarterfinal round.
The postseason stage has been set. Tournament Details:

The Lady Golden Rams and Lady Thorobreds met earlier this season during the SIAC Crossover Tournament, with Albany State sweeping Kentucky State in straight sets. Historically, Kentucky State leads the all-time series 14–9, dating back to 2011, but recent history favors ASU. Albany State owns a nine-match series lead since November 2019.

With momentum, confidence, and a balanced roster, the Lady Golden Rams are poised to make a deep tournament run.

Men's Basketball Preview – Conference Opener vs. Morehouse
After a tough start in the SIAC/GSC Challenge, the Golden Rams men's basketball team returns home looking for a reset as they open SIAC conference play against Morehouse College on Thursday, November 20.
Morehouse enters with a 0–2 record and a new identity under newly appointed head coach Larry Dixon, making this matchup a battle between two proud programs seeking their first win of the season.

Last season, the two teams split the 2024–25 series 1–1, with both meetings going down to the wire. Albany State will look to rely on home-court energy and early-season adjustments to secure its first victory of the year.
Football Preview – NCAA Playoffs Round 1 vs. Valdosta State
The spotlight turns to the ASU Coliseum as Albany State Football prepares to host Valdosta State in the first round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs, marking the Golden Rams' first home playoff game since 2021.
This postseason bid also marks the third time in program history that Albany State enters the playoffs as a No. 1 seed in the Super Region.

Valdosta State leads the all-time series 22–2, but the Golden Rams aim to rewrite history in front of a national audience. Albany State's last victory over Valdosta State came in 2017, a commanding 29–12 win. ASU's first win in the series occurred in 2004 (24–22).

With a top-ranked defense, a balanced offensive attack, and championship confidence, the Golden Rams are poised for one of the week's biggest games in Division II football.
  • Saturday, Nov. 22 – vs Valdosta State (Albany, Ga., ASU Coliseum)
